My little brother sent me this picture, the small boat in the picture is a herring seiner, this is the largest single set on herring ever recorded in the Alaska sac roe fishery, they had 1700 tons of fish in the net, worth about $800,000. It took three days to get all those fish pumped out of the net and to the plant to strip the roe, almost all of which goes to Japan. It's pictures like this that keep me going, and don't worry the herring fishery is highly regulated and there will be more to catch this year, kind of makes me wish I had a herring seine permit. That's what we call fishing.

Just curious - after they strip the roe, what happens to the rest of the herring? Cat food? Fertilizer? British breakfasts?

Ultimately, 'fertilizer', of course...

Poultry feed mostly, most processing plants have reduction capability, some is converted to fish oil, which is used for various things like cosmetics, nothing is wasted.
