My camper came with aluminum turnbuckles. Do most people use steel?

The aluminum have worked fine so far. I'm just thinking, would they hold up in Baja?

Yep, they do...

Most people seem to use them as is and just check them periodically to see if they loosen up. Some have double nutted them or put wire through them etc. to keep them from spinning loose. There is a thread on here somewhere that discusses the different tricks people have come up with.

No issues in Baja, plenty of folks here have field tested them there. As CJ8 says, you should definitely check them periodically as they can loosen.
