RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West White Rim advice

So would you recommend Taylor instead of Labryinth for our last night? Never been to either one of them.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West White Rim advice

OK, everyone! I took all your comments to heart and went back and checked the online campsites. Guess what- some had opened up! So I talked with a very nice and helpful ranger (miracle!) and here is our revised schedule for next week: Monday: Drive from Durango, last minute gas, beer, wine (you...

Moab now, Ron? If it is as beautiful a day as we are having in Durango, I'm envious! But wait! If I'm in Durango getting ready to walk down the River Trail three miles to Happy Hour at the Red Snapper how could I be jealous of anyone? Thanks for the encouragement!

I totally agree with Cayuse re: the above. However, for "self rescue" purposes only (and NOT because I'm addicted to this site) does anyone have any feedback if there is any Verizon phone or internet coverage along the WR Trail? (We do have two Wilson boosters- one for cell phones and another...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West White Rim advice

Thanks. No pets. We do carry a plug kit and a small 12 volt air compressor. I've been thinking about upgrading to a higher capacity model for airing my tires back up. (I've never bothered airing down but thinking maybe it would be a good idea for the White Rim.) Any suggestions on compressors?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West White Rim advice

That is exactly what we plan to do! Plus while the NPS may not like us "breaking the rules" if things really get impassable we always have an extra week's worth of food, water and likker on board so we can always hunker down wherever and wait for things to dry out. BTW, great photos and thanks...

I appreciate the input. Sounds like we'll be fine IF the weather cooperates.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West White Rim advice

So in my time-honored "Ready, Fire, Aim" fashion I saw some sites open up for next week on the White Rim, grabbed 'em and am now suffering a bit of "permit remorse". So for you experienced White Rimmers... 1. My 4WD Ram 2500/ Flatbed Hawk has a 8 1/2 foot clearance. Will this be OK for the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Paria Canyon Roads

Zion NP is incredible but so are the crowds. It is the only place on a hiking trail where I had to look both ways and "merge" into the stream of walkers. I haven't been to Bryce, etc but my guess is all NP's are the same. I'm just saying...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 78" wide vs. 84" wide

Thanks for all the opinions. (Most of which lean toward the 84" width.) we would like a bit more interior space to avoid the square dancing needed when both people are up and dressing, etc. I'll keep you all posted.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Stanley, Sawtooths and other Idaho high country

Great photos. In August Sioux and I made a long planned two week trip to Idaho. (Including running the Magruder corridor.) But after 5 or 6 days of fighting the really intense smoke we retreated back to monsoon saturated but-no-forest-fires northern Colorado! Glad you had clear skies and great...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 78" wide vs. 84" wide

So I know the full size options from All Terrain Camper can be had in either 78" wide or 84". For those who have the 84" ATC's has the extra width ever been a problem in tight spots? I do note the F-350 I'm looking at ordering has a cab width of 85.3" (with mirrors folded) so I guess the wider...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Exhaust fan options

Kinda the same for me. If it means making too many compromises I may just build away without worrying about height and install a 9' high garage door. The garage has a 10' ceiling. Frustrating to be so close but oh well... :)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Exhaust fan options

Dave, All truck manufacturers have a "source book" with all dimensions for all configurations. Here is the one I'm using. Check out page 12. https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/topics/2017/2017_F-350_F-450_F-550_SD_Chassis_Cabs_-_Specs.pdf

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Exhaust fan options

So I'm noodling around my next build. (the eternal quest) As of now it will be on a 2018 SRW F-350 Supercab in a "chassis cab" configuration. (Biggest difference is the rails are straight and 107" long allowing a much easier custom flatbed build with a 38" wide x 6" high "shovel box" the length...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What's better than an All Terrain Camper?

So what changes did you make from the previous one? I'm already planning my next flatbed camper (undecided between ATC or ordering my third FWC) and really would like to learn from your experience. Thanks, Steve

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West What's better than an All Terrain Camper?

My thinking exactly. For those considering this and ordering new look closely at a "chassis cab". Quite a few advantages over a regular pickup. I'll probably be going with a Ford Supercab in the F350 SRW. Manxman, what is the height of your new unit from the bed to the top of the camper and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Adding Solar to a 2007 Keystone

I'm envious of your very well thought out solar system, Craig. (I don't know why but any time I see words like "volt" or "amps" my normally pretty sharp brain turns to mush.) And yes, it is always scary when your truck won't turn over. Since Sioux and I do almost exclusively solo dispersed...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Pleasant surprise!

We added 1" insulation between the strips on our Flatbed Hawk. (It compressed a bit when we bolted it down.) We also have indoor-outdoor carpet cut to fit and loose laid inside. Floor always feels warm(er). We also have the Arctic liner which helps... I suppose. At the end of the day these...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Planning a trip into S/E Oregon,ID & WA

Ummm, don't know how it is now but we were in Idaho in early August and after a week fighting constant vista-obscuring smoke were going to retreat to one our favorite bird-watching meccas- Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Fortunately I called first and the girl said, "Smoke? Well, I couldn't...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Keeping out the foot / shoe dirt....

Sioux and I have just sorta given up and live with "less than sanitary" conditions on the floor. It IS "camping", after all. (About once a week I yank out the indoor-outdoor carpet and sweep it off.)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC mattress

Historical context: We HATED the mattress on our 2012 Hawk that closely resembled the consistency of a pine 2 x 12! With much fanfare FWC rolled out a new mattress for our 2015 Hawk. Sioux said it was "slightly better". So... A) I bought a 1" "eggshell" mattress at Walmart and (with some...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Scissor steps mounted permanently or not?

We permanently mounted the Torklift A7504 (6" x 20" actual step size which is plenty) on the back of our slide-in Hawk. I through-bolted stainless steel eye bolts through the door frame and then used cables and carabiners to hold the steps up (so they wouldn't obscure the license plate) while...
