    And So They Continue........................Fires

I have had a duffle bag of clothing packed since May. Another duffle of camping gear and warmer clothing pretty much lives in the camper. My housemate and I leave evacuation lists whenever one of us leaves. We were evacuated twice in 2020. This is a horrible thing to have to get used to.

    And So They Continue........................Fires

Friend of mine stayed for the Mountain View fire. 10 hours - just him an a shovel against flames pushed by 80 mph winds but his house is still an oasis of green amongst the devastation in this valley. Crazy? Nope - he was a firefighter on Los Padres for 30 years and the pinyon pines are not the...

    Quick trip over Tioga.

So they are doing the timed pass again? Years ago we used to drive through the park from Tioga to the South entrance. We had three hours.

“Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.” Frank Zappa

    Nanci Griffith

Sweetest voice, stellar songwriting - and covers - she recorded my favorite version of John Prine's Speed of the Sound of Loneliness She had a great deal of influence on my songwriting and playing and was a big part of the soundtrack to a particular part of my life. So many of my favorite...

Fire Rings - Clean Them Up!...And Make Them Disappear

I pull apart fire rings. The ones I demolished in the Walker Canyon last year have not been rebuilt (yet) It was amazing the variety of garbage people left behind. I am not sure it would happen if not for the fire ring. I've pulled apart a lot of wilderness rings as well. I have no idea what...

I need to hear a good new joke

20 seconds in my head? I really don't think I could wish that on anyone (because how would I get them out again?)

Eastern Sierra Nevada - August 2021

I had forgotten about the Lahontons up there! edit to add: I looked up the last year that Lahontans were found in Walker Lake - it was 2010. I was curious because I used to go out there to see the loons and my recollection is that they both disappeared from the lake at the same time - no...

    And So They Continue........................Fires

I experienced that last year during the Slink fire - both ash and burnt sagebrush twigs made a real strange sound falling through the trees. And then the Mountain View fire. My camper and go-bags have been packed since May and the wind puts us on high alert (AKA PTSD) I don't want to insult you...

    Lahontan and Other Trout Stories

The businesses in town believe they are making their living off of this fish. I've asked the county for numbers of tourist dollars vs property tax and I don't get any answer. But yeah - as I mentioned above the town had a conniption with the thought of putting Lahontans back in their home...

It never stops. Another trying to win the Darwin award

I've been charged by a black bear in an unexpected encounter. That woman is about as stupid as they come. But the man with the bison really should not be allowed to reproduce.

    Lahontan and Other Trout Stories

Yup. Those 16 - 18 inchers in Bull Lake were caught on a 4 weight. And one was caught by a large Labrador Retriever. He dropped it at my feet and I returned it to the water along with the rest of them - not a mark on it.

    Lahontan and Other Trout Stories

Bull Lake in the Carson Iceberg Wilderness has a self sustaining population of Lahontans. I've spent a couple of mornings at the inlet stream. I never met the resident bear. Those in charge have been trying to restore Lahontans to Mill Creek (flows through the town of Walker) but I cannot say...

    And So They Continue........................Fires

I don't think you need to apologize for being out somewhere. I fell into a complacency about fire here on the edge of the desert after I moved from the Sierra foothills, elevation 1500. That place burned less than a year after we moved. But especially after two fires last "season" I hear you...

I was headed into Gardnerville for groceries and an oil change - was probably just ahead of you going north. And we are still waiting to hear what is happening with the multiple generators set up on the N end of Walker. We were supposed to be hooked up last night or this morning but it didn't...

    Summer Dayz

We've had rain off and on for several days now - even some nocturnal showers. I was sleeping in the camper that night because the power was off and it was too hot in my bedroom. (the utility company has brought in generators since there were so many miles of line burned in the Tamarack fire we...

    Current Spike in Gas Prices

Power came back on in the middle of the night. I didn't know until this morning because I slept in the camper - too hot in the house. Best night of sleep I've had in a week. If there were earthquakes I slept through them.

There was talk of a generator for Markleeville but they lost 6 miles of transmission line. And us here in this valley may be extremely reluctant to have Liberty Utilities attempt to put this valley on a generator again. The last time someone plugged the wrong thingy into the wrong thingy or in...

Regardless of any "official" report the fire has crossed 395 and his rapidly climbing into the Pine Nut mountains. I can see at least three aircraft, I can also see flames. Back to packing.

    And So They Continue........................Fires

There has been some clarification on this. Traffic headed NB into Nevada is being rerouted at Bridgeport but there is not a "hard" closure until the 108 junction, locals with identification can continue into Walker/Coleville and Sonora Pass is open but you can only go south. I still have to...
