    Using camper on jacks

OK...we're sitting maybe 1200# or more on four places using milk crates? Sure the crates can handle 300# plus apiece but can your floor handle 300# in basically about a 14" x 14" area? The whole point here is to distribute the weight of the camper over the ENTIRE floor and especially around the...

I need to hear a good new joke

Teachers? Right up there with nurses and those who care for animals in my book. None will EVER make much money, but without good ones, society would be the worse without them. When I am President, no civic employee can make MORE than a teacher does!

    Bunk Ladder EDIT/UPDATE

If the lower "bunk" is secured permanently and made up as a bed and you need a step UP to get into the upper "bunk" you might want to try one of those fold-down steps I see guys use to access the roof of their campers. Just a bracket bolted to their camper and a small, fold down step. Since...

    Trucks and Alaskan Camper Question

Now is the time to weigh the truck to see GVWR, Front GAWW and Rear GAWR so you know where to start. Full tanks and you plus a pass would be advised. Everything starts from there...

    Clearance Light Lenses Swap?

No... they are kinda like some of the ones I want to replace in fact....you how it is, trying to get your Alaskan refreshed, rebuilt or restored means you get a little anal retentive on some things. I have found that steel wool is a great material to remove some of the dirt/crud/oxidation from...

    Trucks and Alaskan Camper Question

I wonder if the 8800# refers to the truck with a standard 8' bed on it before the installation of the steel flatbed? Unless you overload the REAR axle when loading up an Alaskan, you can safely add the difference which is about 1800#. In looking at some older Alaskan material, the 8' CO should...

    solar panel increased cost

"Follow The Money" Smoke....I'd say those considerations are right on the money. Remember, the new corporate tax rate is permanent while the teensy-weensy tax break(s) you may or may not get will go away in a few years. We have the best Government money can buy!

    Frozen battery

Not sure about car batts that freeze up overnight or in a day or two of sub-freezing temps...but a camper that is laid up for winter could have the batt removed to a warmer place in the garage. Another option even for sealed AGM batts might be to rig up a heat generating system to avoid...

    Clearance Light Lenses Swap?

I've managed to scrounge a few spare RED Bargman 52 SAE-P-PI 68 lenses for my Alaskan but I haven't run across any of the Amber (yellow) ones. Any of you other scroungers happen to be interested is trading a couple of the Amber ones for the Red ones I have? There are some missing and a couple...

    solar panel increased cost

If the American-made panels will now be exactly the same price as the overseas ones, then the customer can still shop for the best product. However, if the 30% tariff has now priced the same quality panels much higher, then consumers will buy the American panel for the most part. If the...

    Kick'in the Habit

Tuff....giving up smoking is one of those things that you will probably have seen over the year improve your health, enliven your taste buds and give you clearer lungs perhaps. However, while it is not really possible to add up the potential for a longer life, I can guarantee you the QUALITY of...

    Totaled F150 / Ocelot unharmed....?

The rush to settle any accident is to prevent you from coming up with additional losses. As in my case they did pay for two weeks of lost wages since my back was messed up and my neck was stiff but nothing for "pain and suffering" and had I knew I was going to have that positional vertigo issue...

    Totaled F150 / Ocelot unharmed....?

However your O is mounted to the truck bed is where to look first...basically being rear-ended, the Jeep tried to push your truck out from under the camper so that is where I would check for damage to begin with. After that, as you and Marty noted, a systems check and a really GOOD amount of...

    Another Alaskan Owner

I was #2 behind 62C20 (Randy) on the Sonoma 76 8 Ft. CO he bought a few months ago. He decided to go in a different direction with camper for his 2017 Ford and keep the 1962 Chevy for a work truck so he kindly contacted me and I went to see it and bought it. It is one of the best 60s or 70s I...

    Trailer Towing / Weight

Here is my F-250 VIN tag below... While the COMBINATION of the Front GAWR and Rear GAWR (3920 and 6084) does add up to 10,004 lbs....this does not mean I can hit the scales at 10,003 and be either legal or safe! The maximum is still 8800 lbs. I just weighed my F-250 and it came in at 6400#...

    Coffee maker?

Coffeemaker? That would be me....we had no heater in the old Alaskan (and none in the new/old one) so I bravely got up as fired up the stove under the coffee pot. I went with an old-school aluminum drip version, the one with a glass knob on top you can see the coffee bubble up into it. It has...

    96 10' cab over

I would vote for a dismounted AK to be in the lowered position. Other than getting it supported properly and tarped against the elements and perhaps a 100 watt light bulb in there turned on 24/7 to help out keeping it dry as possible...maybe removing the cushions to a warmer storage place...

    96 10' cab over

Conventional wisdom is that the side/front/rear-to-floor joints are where the AK has issues...it is important to support the perimeter as well as the middle of the floor to prevent failure. With that in mind, any off-truck dismount for extended work on the camper needs this exact type of...

    2x4 Under the camper alternatives?

Not sure about the construction methods of other campers, but Alaskans over 40 years old tend to have soft or well jiggled joints so supporting the in the bed is critical. I wasn't sure if I needed to raise my '76 CO 8 ft. to clear the cab so I used a 5/8" plywood and some 2x6s I had laying...

Repainting the Alaskan emblem, what paint?

Rusty....would that be "Bullwinkle"? Known by Boris & Natasha simply as "Moose and Squirrel"? The rear ALASKAN emblem on my new-to-me '76 8 Ft CO still has some gold paint showing on the antlers....either that or its the strangest faded yellowish...BROWN I've ever seen.

    Raising Issues and Lowering.....Split Tube

I picked up a 76 8 ft, CO the other day and when I got it in the driveway to raise the top I forgot how touchy they are if the truck is not level fore and aft and side to side. So after a couple tries with it sticking, I first went to clean the slides with rubbing alcohol and lubed them with a...

Repainting the Alaskan emblem, what paint?

Thanks, gents.... Shall we say Forest Green, Fire Engine Red and whatever Gold is available? Testors came to mind as it is used on model cars, planes, ships, etc. I figured nail polish would possible soften the plastic.
