RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Upsizing

I went into this big debate last year. I had a pretty nice 1997 Chevy 1/2 ton, it technically handled the camper fine but it wasn't enjoyable. Definetely not compared to my 'new' dodge 3/4T. I will only give a few hints as this debate can rage on for years. Ford - you will find 2003.5+ to...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Where did you mount your Hi-Lift jack?

Here's a sketch and photos of the brackets I built. The clamps are 2-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 3/16 wall rectangular tubing that I split in half. The rest of the material is 1-1/2 x 1/4 flat stock. I welded the clamp to the bar at a 90* angle. I added another piece of flat stock to this joint because I...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Wire Upgrade from Truck to Camper

I used the Anderson power pole connectors. I really like them, they're a good positive connection. Get a good crimper to attach the wire to the poles. The only thing I need to rig up is a better way to hang the connector when the camper isn't on the truck. It just lays in the box with a...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Southern Idaho Wanderings

Wanderers, I've got a issue, a problem per se. I have a bunch of time off and don't know what to do. I'm heading to the NW corner of Montana for some rock climbing with the wife from June 29 to July 2. I have the rest of the week off and don't have to be back at work until July 9th. I was...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Bike Rack

The factory mount pictured above looks to be more of a hindrance than anything. It appears like you need to remove the bikes to access the camper door, plus, it looks like it would offset the bikes way out to the right of the camper. Best guess would be that the tires would stick out at least...

hmm, interesting. He was coming out of my community too, wonder if someone there has purchased one. I wish I could have caught him but he was going the other way and I was in my Landcruiser. That thing is so slow, its own shadow will out run it.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Spotted - Calgary, AB

Hey, Long shot - Who was driving through Calgary yesterday (May 3, 6pm) in the NW part of town. I didn't have a good chance to ID the rig. It was a darker, charcol color 4 door, newish pick-up with what looked like a quite new Hawk. It caught me off guard, so I couldn't get a better look. I...

Bought a 2500 Ram Big Horn last night. I sure appreciate everyone's help. I'll be chiming back in. Thanks again, Steve Picture or it didn't happen!! Congrats on the new truck. I'm glad you went with a 2500. I'm also a convertee from the 1/2ton camp to the 3/4. Its much nicer and the...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Must have aftermarket accessories?

I would nix the rubber mat. I have a good line-x spray in liner and over the last 7 years, I've only ripped up one little tag when I threw a piece of sharp metal in the back. I do have some slight wear spots where the stippling of the line-x has worn smooth but not through to the metal bed.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Question for you Geologist types.

Ted- I swear, more geological papers have been written and proposed on the back of pub napkins than paper themselves. When we were going through school, there were always a good percentage of geo's present at the pub at any one time. Because we were a smaller class, we knew everyone from...

Holy Smokes, GBW, what kinda ultra liberal geology school did you go to? At Appalachian State, we NEVER talked about "redistribution". Dontcha know that's a Commie plot? Seriously, nice work on the diagrams. I was always a metallic minerals and energy minerals exploration guy--the bugs never...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Question for you Geologist types.

Aye, There are a ton of questions here... Ted - you're thinking of a cast which is an imprint of sorts. The casts or molds can be filled in with any material afterwards, taking the exact shape of the original bone/shell/tooth/whatever. Currently, the ocean is at its highest point in the last...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Return trip to northern DV

I get to nerd out here. The donut shaped fossil is a Crinoid oscicle. A little to the right, you can see some of the donuts are 'stacked' and laying on their side, that is the Criniod stem. Think of them as a modern day Rose but underwater, floating back and forth in gentle waters. And...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Traded out my truck

I was taking a quick look at the stabilizer and noticed it was for the 5.9/6.7L engines (stated on the website). Pods has the Hemi, so I'm not sure it would work?? I'm sure you'd be giving them a call anyways. I'm not sure if the steering box housings and such are the same. Also, since his...

Nice option, I emailed for pricing on a silver one... Thanks! Interesting awning. I like it. Did you ever get a response for pricing? If you'd like, I can be a facilitator for shipping if it saves you some $$.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Already Been Chewed- Trucks

I'm not sure there is much difference in front end repair prices between the IFS and solid front ends anymore. A ball joint swap on a Dodge is going to run you as much if not more than an upper control arm swap on a Chevy. The labor on the Dodge will more than exceed the parts savings versus...

Alright, T-linkage is in, new tires, coil spacers removed, moog track bar bushings, blisten 5100s all around and a fresh alignment. What you could call a fairly pleasant ride now as opposed to the lumber wagon ride. Tire fit in wheel well after pulling the spacers: were you blown away at...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Already Been Chewed- Trucks

I went through this debate myself recently. All have their pluses and minuses. No one is better really. Chevy - has the nicest cab and nicest ride but front suspension and injectors are to be desired, slightly lower stance, no manual option. Ford - has a nice cab size but is limited to...

Factory dampener or aftermarket? I think this is the right blisten 5100 http://cart.bilsteinus.com/productsearch/33-170794 for about the same price as the factory unit. There is the Carli blisten 7100 kit if you want that, probably not really needed for our no to low lift rigs...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West New (to me) Truck ideas and opinions

I had looked at quite a few 7.3L fords too. Them and the 03-06 cummins were on the top of my list. I liked the ford platform. I might venture to say that it rode nicer than the dodge. Interior was a moot point, neither are anything to write home about. I would have to say chevy takes the...

well, it seems we've wandered around a little on this thread but I'll provide a little update. I'm in the process of closing the deal on a 2003 3/4T Dodge Cummins with the 4 door "crewcab**" 180,000kms (112000 Mi for you yankee doodles). Seems like a pretty nice ride. I can tell its a little...

Well, the search continues... The tranny was pooched in this last rig. My mechanic/good buddy said lowball or prepare for an expensive tranny swap sometime soon down the road. I also drove his truck, a 2006 dodge Ram 3500, nice rig. I think i'm going to include Dodge's in my search. I was a...
