RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Need info for 2way refrigerator install

RPM, Shoot me a PM and I can tell you what I know about my recent 2-way refrig research, purchase and install. There's a lot to consider when buying a refrig and installing it into a camper that previously had an ice box. Mine had an ice box too and removed it for the refrig install.

Thanks Bill for the info on your solar set up and how it's working. I have my refrig and solar panel semi-installed and have been testing both to see how it's all working. So far I've found out that if I run my refrig all night I will have about 87-90% of my battery capacity left in the...

I just today installed my 78 inch bars on towers on my Yakima tracks. The 78 inch bars are perfect for the factory mounted tracks on a newer Hawk.

No worries. I plan on doing a full post on my 2-way refrig install and my solar panel/controller/monitor install when I'm done and have a couple of trips under my belt.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Thermostat & Battery Monitor Questions

From what I know the 2030rv is either already out in a very limited quantity or is about to go out. The differences between the 2030 and 2025 is so little that I opted to get the 2025 now and not wait. Not to mention I was going to go with a different solar controller than the new controller...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Thermostat & Battery Monitor Questions

I cannot not say if one is better than the other. I installed this shunt kit: http://www.amsolar.com/home/amr/page_126_40/tri-metric_wire_harness_wshunt.html Call Roger at AM Solar to see what they say about the two different shunts. They're very helpful.

I'm using the 500 amp shunt. I could be wrong but I seem to hear/see the 500 amp shunt used more often than the 100 amp shunt. I'm not sure why though.

Here's a picture of my battery box with the shunt installed. The Trimetric unit is easy to install if you closely follow the instructions, and there's a lot of instructions and information!

DrJ, I installed a Trimetric exactly where you installed your meter.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Solar Controller Installation Location

Thanks DrJ. Your battery box looks similar to mine and I'm guessing you have a newer camper. I was just out there trying to figure out a spot to install it and I came up with the exact same location that you did. Installing it where you did I could probably not install the battery temp sensor...

Craig...did you install the Morningstar Sunsaver MPPT? JHa...if it was done by FWC I believe they install PWM models, which have different requirements for clearances above and below it. If I'm not mistaken for Morningstar it's 2" above and below for the PWM and 6" above and below for the MPPT...

Yakima makes 86" bars too. Along with 78" and shorter models. http://www.rei.com/product/854677/yakima-86-inch-round-bars-pair

I just purchased a Sunsaver 15A MPPT controller for my solar project and I'm curious where others have installed this same unit in a newer Hawk. I was considering putting it in the same box as the batteries, but I'm not sure how much heat it generates. I know it needs 6 inches above and below...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fiberglass Siding vs Regular on Hawk

FWC told me the weight difference between the fiberglass and aluminum siding was neglible. Also, since the fiberglass is solid underneath, it can't be dented like the aluminum siding.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fiberglass Siding vs Regular on Hawk

I agree...the paint of the truck is much more likely to get scratched than the fiberglass siding. Like Kilroy, I too haven't seen any issues with scratching of the fiberglass on my camper.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fiberglass Siding vs Regular on Hawk

For me it was fiberglass or no camper! I asked a couple of the guys working behind the scene at FWC and they both agreed that the fiberglass siding was better in so many ways. They also said that in the years since they've been installing fiberglass neither of them have seen a rig comeback in...

I'm in the market too for one of these. I have one right now, but it's a bit too small. Of the two you listed I'd get the second one as it's a bit bigger. Look at the Curt models too as they are pretty nice and USA made.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Large Solar Panels on a FWC

Central Toast, Thanks I will. I'm debating what to do right now for a solar panel. I'm tempted to make my own portable out of two 100 watt panels but I also really like the idea of the panel on the roof and one thing less for me to lug around and have to set up. I'll PM you to see what your...

Central Toast, Will your solar set-up also charge your battery fully each day, in addition to running the refrig? What I'm going to need is panel big enough to run a refrig during the day, but also fully charge my dual AGM batteries so the refrig will run throughout the night. I'll PM you...

What I am thinking will cost more but it'll be made with a lot better items and I think it'd increase power output too by putting the controller closer the battery along with much heavier cables between the controller and battery. I was thinking two 100 watt panels from Grape Solar (attached...

Has anyone ever bought one of these portable units and then removed the charge controller from the panel and used a charge controller in the camper? I was thinking that an MPPT located in the camper very close to the batter along with a portable solar panel could work pretty well. Not to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Large Solar Panels on a FWC

Thought I'd post that I have installed the refrig temporarily into the camper while I wait till I get up to FWC so they can cut the exterior vent. I've been running it to see how many amps it uses and in my first full 24 hour run it used, on average, 1.6 amps/hr. It was also 27 degrees this...

Went on a walk today with the wife and kid through Los Osos and saw a Granby with fiberglass siding parked in front of a house. Funny thing is I've never seen this camper before on various walks through this neighborhood.
