    Electrical discharge

Anybody ever get an electrical discharge when metal touches the metal corner or door of their camper. it doesn't do it all the time just occasionally. It's pretty scary when it happens. Is it just static discharge? Do I not have it grounded correctly? thx

    Ram 1500

I have a 1500 6cyl and a Hawk. It's got the 6 lugs so rated to 2200# it's a 19 and have the camper on full time. When we load it for baja with bikes and kayaks it's at max maybe over but does fine. plenty of power, 17mpg Airbags keep it level. I do need some better shocks in the back. It...

Solo Loading a Kayak on a Hawk

We take our 2 12.5' kayaks to baja every year. It takes 2 to load them using the scissor stairs and a small step ladder. It works OK. It would be nice to have a loader but that's more weight on top. We crank the roof up with a speaker stand crank.

    electrical sparking from turnbuckles

The engine was shut off so no lights It was the drivers side rear turnbuckle that goes near the camper I'm liking the static discharge idea, not sure how it would build up enough for a visible discharge thanks all

    electrical sparking from turnbuckles

I only saw this happen on the one turnbuckle. It didn't happen a second time I touched the metal corner of camper to turnbuckle. It was like it discharged and was done. The camper is connected to the truck with a 6ga black wire from truck battery to ground bar under the cabinet. I don't see a...

    electrical sparking from turnbuckles

While tightening a loose turnbuckle in the rear wheel well it touched the corner of the camper. An electrical spark was arching across from the camper to the turnbuckle. Hummm Can't imagine this is normal grounding. All systems are working fine, no blown fuses. Any idea where this electrical...

    Auxiliary Battery in line fuses?

If you aren't getting a good charge you may want to upgrade the wire from the truck to the camper. It should be a minimum 6awg gauge. modern alternators don't put out much voltage and you want the biggest wire you can get. Are you charging an electric frig from the alternator? That takes a lot...

FWC Electrical basics and upgrading to lithium!

Hummmm so as long as I keep the negative terminal wire all the way from the truck battery to the camper battery, I'll be fine. And the same for the positive terminal wire. I hope this is as simple as it seems thx

FWC Electrical basics and upgrading to lithium!

thanks Vic, your electrical expertise is so helpful. I'm a little confused! In most wiring applications there is a black/Red and a white wire. I believe the white is the common and black/Red the hot or positive. Most also have a green wire which is ground. I think the camper is wired this way...

FWC Electrical basics and upgrading to lithium!

Thanks! What about a ground wire. Shouldn't the camper be grounded? The existing plug-in has 3 wires, one being a ground. I'm running 2 wires to the truck. Do they both need to be 6 awg? I guess the IOTA is just for shore, thanks

FWC Electrical basics and upgrading to lithium!

This is awesome info! So if I have my plan right. I can run a 6awg wire from the battery to the truck/camper disconnect plug. Then replace the camper wire with 6awg wire to the breaker. Then I have to put a 100amp breaker in (I hope the IOTA can take a new breaker.) Then run 6awg to the Sure...

Using a pro audio adj speaker stand to raise your roof

We use the speaker stand when we have 2 kayaks on top. It along with 4 40# struts works great. It's a hassle to find a home after it's up but it just goes outside. I'm real curious how to wire my old cordless drill to plug into the cigarette lighter power port. Any help would be nice on that

Truck doesn't talk to the camper

Thanks all for the electrical education 1. I will upgrade my wire to 6awg 2. I want to upgrade the camper disconnect plug. What is a good one? 3. What size of a ACR do I need? I have not gone to electric refrigerator yet, and still have 1 -12v AGM batt Our electrical needs are pretty minimal...

Truck doesn't talk to the camper

During our 2 month Baja trip, I realized the trucks alternator is not charging the battery when we drive. A few cloudy days and the battery gets down to 12V. The 120 solar panel does pretty good but it has its limits. I'm expecting the truck to charge the battery 1. How can I test if the camper...

    Insuring a FWC through USAA

Thanks Wallowa! USAA was thinking and charging me as if it was a pull behind camper. Now it's just part of my trucks policy. That saves money. Good post guy

    Insuring a FWC through USAA

Wow! I have had USAA for a long time. I got them to add our Hawk camper to my policy but it costs me $4.5/mo Not sure how Wallowal got USAA to add his Hawk at no cost. Maybe they think it's a pull behind camper. Are you sure your policy reads like mine below? Miscellaneous Vehicles on this...

    Anyone with a Ram 1500?

I have the 2019 1500 RAM 6cyl it says its supposed to get 24 hwy mileage, but of course it doesn't with the weight of the camper. I see 14-15 mpg I need to beef up the suspension also besides that it's a great truck for hauling the 4wc

    Lift panel structural failure

Hey I finally stressed out my lift panels by lifting too much weight on the roof. I have been lifting the weight of 2 sea kayaks and a solar panel for years. I have 2011 Kestra. I have 4 -40# struts to assist the lift. (they are getting old) I finally see the wear and stress is on the thin...

Hot water heater - necessary or luxury?

It's a luxury we can't live without. If you use your camper for a base in remote areas to hike, bike, kayak, ect all day. A HOT shower is a godsend. Really all you need is to rinse the grime off. It does use precious water, but so worth it. I would look at instant hot water heaters if cabinet...

    Looking for more storage

I recently was replacing a rotten panel under the frig and discovered a small space behind the propane compartment. I put a door to access it. You always need more storage in these rigs. Anybody else found little hidden storage areas???
