I think he had too many Labotts with Mr. Beam chasers, while texting his ex and while waiting for a reply he decided to cut cross country then fell asleep.

Or..... He missed his appointment time to get the trailer to the Depot and decided to run up ahead a bit and sneak it on a car really quietly right after the engineer goes by.
