Hello FWC Owners

The 2017 Four Wheel Camper Rally & Campout is just a few days away.

Everything is looking good ! : )

Location: Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Area -- www.ohv.parks.ca.gov/ocotillowells

Dates: Nov. 10th – 12th, 2017

Cost: FREE --- (Just bring some food to share for the potlucks each night).

“Main Street Event Center” -- http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/pages/25010/files/blowsand-reader-jan-feb_2014.pdf

Directions to get there:

First the map of the General area: http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1219

Coming from the north…Interstate 15 has less weekend traffic than I-5. Highway 76 from I-15 east, is a two lane narrow, twisty road that goes by at least one casino. Highway 78 is wider, goes through Escondido and two small towns (Ramona and Santa Isabel) with slower speeds.

Towing an Off-road Toy:

When you review the map you will note that highway 78 runs up a mountain through 1875 gold rush town “Julian”, (site of the 2015 Rally). If your pulling a trailer or flat towing a vehicle you will want to turn left at “Santa Isabel” onto Highway 79 and bypass Julian and the very narrow, steep, "Banner pass grade road" (down the mountain).

Santa Isabel features a grocery store, restaurant and famous pie shop. Pick up a pie or two for the pot luck - yummmmm!

Proceed about 8 miles or so on Highway 79 toward Warner Springs and Temecula. Turn right on “San Felipe Road (“S2”) towards “Borrego Springs”. Just before the turn-off is a "electrical transfer station" on your right, which makes “S2” easier to find at night.

DON’T take the Borrego Springs turn to the left (about 3 miles south of the intersection)…Stay on “S2”. This is a wide fairly straight road with gentle curves that is excellent for vehicles pulling trailers.

After about 16 miles, “S2” intersects with Highway 78. (Scissors Crossing). Turn left East). Proceed 20 miles to “Ocotillo SVRA Discovery Center” which will be on your left.

Time from Santa Isabel cross-roads to Scissors crossing - 30 minutes

The address of the Ocotillo Wells SVRA “Discovery Center”:

5172 Highway 78, Borrego Springs, CA 92004

Phone 760-767-5393

The “Main Street Event Facility” is one mile east of the Discovery Center also on Highway 78. Turn left on Main Street. The “Event facility” is about 500 yards on your left. Look for the “Four Wheel Camper Banner”.

Jim Massopust will be arriving Thursday night. We will be rolling in Friday AM.

I am currently researching which FWC i am going to be getting for my Tundra.

Anyone think it would be an issue if i head out there and poke around some folks units?

I met with Jason last week at his shop, but i am curious on what people have done with their "Hawk Shell" builds specifically.

Thanks
Kevin

FYI for those not familiar with out local desert. Cell phone reception is spotty at best. Non-existent in most areas. While fires are permitted, no burning of any wood with nails and such - no pallets.

Can't wait to see everyone!

So Cal Adventurer I'm sure you will be welcome - we love to talk about our rigs! :)

On my my trip to the Saline hot Springs last month we brought 7 ea 3-hour presto-logs less than $2.00 each. Buy the ones in the tan bag from Stater Bros. Nice high flame every night and very little residue,

We also carry an "oil" change pan as I believe we are not supposed to have ground fires??

Kris, is that true?

Looking forward to this and checking out the rigs/builds, ill be rolling in Friday mid day.

Big white Tundra 4x4 and leer shell (soon to be replaced with FWC)

Thanks
Kevin

Ground fires are allowed. Showers are $0.50 for 2 minutes and they do take quarters.

No ground fires in Anza Borrego State park..

So there isn't any confusion. We are NOT in Anza Borrego State Park, we are in Ocotillo Wells SRVA and ground fires are allowed. There are fire pits at the area we're in though so no worries either way.

Great meeting you all and HUGE thanks for letting me poke around all your campers!

I've decided on a Front Dinette layout and hopefully ordering soon.

Looking forward to it!

Here is a panoramic shot i got of camp as i was leaving Saturday am.

Best rally ever. We had 40 rigs compared to an average of 20 when we meet in San Clemente.

Thanks to Stan and Dan for making the 10 hour drive bringing, snacks, drinks, firewood, breakfast, plastic ware and their energy.

Thanks to "Rich and Kim" for being our Trail masters and Larry for being the back door. We had 24 vehicles on the tour to the "pumpkin patch" and the "Gas Domes". Our group was made up of 17 Four Wheel Campers, two Jeep Cherokees, two Suzuki 30 year old Samurai's, one 4 door Frontier waiting for delivery of its new Fleet and two motorcycles.

Thanks to my wife Leslie for doing "Check-in" and organizing the dispensing of the rally shirts and submitting her body to 59 miles of dust and bone-jarring washboard road. Though she said next year she wants to ride in a vehicle with a/c and softer suspension than the leaf spring Samurai.

Would the person who videoed the tour please post a copy on WTW for those of us who can't figure out how "Instagram" works. Thanks.
