84 Fleet - 09 Tacoma - Project

Last time she will be with her original mate, the 4 cylinder Tacoma. Camper is tucked away in the garage for a few weeks while I get some stuff sorted. I'll be sure to post new pictures of the truck in the meantime.

Guess I'll have to change the name of my thread since I sold the Tacoma. Now the proud owner of a 05 Tundra which I am loving so far. As I washed up the Tacoma for the new owner I took some time to chat about its history and how it handled the old fleet.

2018 was a stellar year for me. Of course not with some hard times but still, really happy with how the year went and excited to keep the momentum moving into the new year. I made a 'highlight' reel of my year that I thought some of you may enjoy, lots of great truck camper scenes too. So glad this camper allows me to access so many awesome locations!

Great job, especially the last piece. Your editing skills are sharp. Was that Alan Watts in the voiceover? I used to listen to him over the radio during long, late night drives back in the 60s/70s. Just me, my VW bus, and the lonesome road. Ha ha.

I found the song just on the random youtube channels I listen to while I write.

But on closer examination you are correct, it appears to be Alan Watts.

Glad you like the highlight reel, I am really happy with how it came out.

Porter and I have been texting outside of this site as he rebuilds his roof. One questions that cames up was the layering of the roof, canvas, headliner. So I made a quick sketch and figured I would share it here as well.

Below is a schematic of how I layered everything. When I had originally removed the camper the order of the roof and the canvas was swapped, with the canvas being on the exterior. However, when I put it all back together I tucked the canvas under the roof which I think will be beneficial to resisting weather.

I had actually added one extra piece of canvas and velcro to act as the attachment point for the artic linear.

That is all, just wanted to provide a touch more info I figured someone may appreciate later.

I am spending a lot of tie at home with the new kid. But I still need to make videos, so I am looping back and recaping a lot of the content I talked about on this build page but in video form. Check out the first installment here. Any more questions send them my way.

Hi Tim. I’ve been following your truck tear down and rebuild on YouTube. I am a subscriber. You have really inspired me to build a truck camper that folds down like yours. I have built a slide on camper with all timber frame and clad with aluminium with a pop up of about 400 mm. I now want to build one totally out of aluminium framing and weld it all myself as I’ve got extremely good at alloy welding. I’m trying to work out what size frames you have. Are they made out of 25x50 mm. You can tell I’m an Australian as I’m talking in metric. I want to curf the front the same as yours too. I’ve looked at your sketches but I can’t quiet read them properly. Don’t know whether it’s my computer or not but I want to make it the same size as yours in the framing size. I love your you tube videos well done.
Regards
James

Hey James,

Nearly all the framing of my Four Wheel Camper is 1" aluminum tube (sqaure) so that is 25mm for your galactic units. Occasionally in the frame there are double width studs so 1X2" or 25X50mm. Some of those double width studs are just two single ones butted and welded together, others are truly extruded to that dimension.

The photos of my drawings live in this google drive.

Maybe it will be better resolution over there.

Thanks for checking out my videos and let me know if there are additional questions I can answer for you - Tim

Hi Tim thank you for the advice and go to google drive photos. They are really clear. I can see that you are right in saying that most of the framing is in one inch and doubled up in some places for strength. On the top of the frame that goes around the front with curffing cut out is that one inch with flat or some other type of extrusion. Is you roof frame made out of a bigger material and then shaped to the outside one inch frame or is it all curved. I’ve been over your photos for the last hour.
How wide is the bed piece when it slides out as in side by side measurements. I like the idea of how you slide it in and out of your way. Just wondering does it just push back with board on board and does that catch on the sheets etc. I watched some more of your you tube movies last night and loved the sewing one with the window. Awesome of you to get back to me. I’m a tig welder in my spare time and got pretty competent after my boat modifications.
Cheers
James
