Baja Trip Report

First let me apologize for the lack of a FWC on my rig in this report, but I am on the hunt and plan to fix that soon!

I've been back for almost a week now from a 2 week sojourn with my hound. I noticed there was quite a bit of talk about Baja while I was gone so this seems appropriate. The itinerary went roughly like this:

San Diego (Flopped at a buddy's place for an early start the following day)
Catavina Boulder Field
Bahia Tortugas
Bahia Asuncion
Punta Abreojos
Ensenada Blanca
Punta Conejo
Todos Santos (Los Cerritos & La Pastora)
Playa Santispac
Punta Rosarito

Perhaps a bit much for 2 weeks but it was still very relaxing. It had been several years since I drove the whole way down. Attached are some pics if I can figure it out...

Great trip and great pix. Was Tortuga cold? How was the river bed (road) going in. I hope you hac some of that great pastry at Santispac.

It's a Kelty Carport (medium), similar to the Kelty shade structure you may have seen in some of Tomas Tierra's posts. It's made for rigs with roof racks and velcros nicely to the rack, pretty bombproof. I'm thinking it may work well as a vestibule on a FWC/ATC awning too.

The road to Tortuga was brutal baja washboard, at the Pemex I actually found a bolt on my floor mat that I still haven't figured out where it belongs! Weather was quite nice, got some light rain while there, I think from TS Juliette, but definitely not cold. Heard about the pastries at Santispac but unfortunately didn't partake.

That's the second Kelty shade I've seen here, I really like that option. Someday I need to get down to Baja, sit on a beach and do nothing. Maybe a FWC/ATC owners rally to the penninsula....?

Any luck in your hunt for a camper?

I'm guessing you headed back to Mex 1 at Bahia Asuncion. Next time a great ride is down the beach road to Punta Abreojos and Campo Rene'. There is a great estuary there (Estero El Coyote) and good whale watching. It's the north side of Laguna San Ignacio. Pretty good surfing down the coast as well. Man I just cant get enough of Baja. We need a caravan trip!!!

Actually I drove the whole Vizcaino Peninsula from Punta Eugenia, down through Hipolito, La Bocana, Abreojos and out to San Ignacio. Unfortunately I didn't stop at Campo Rene. Caught some fun waves but it was a little late in the season for that area. Sure is a REMOTE and beautiful stretch of Baja.

Love the caravan idea, I'd be way down for that.

Bahia dreaming!

i wish everyone would stop posting Bahia trips as it disturbs my sleep with dreams of fresh clams,triggerfish sunsets sunrises,quite times nice people i could go on for ever.back to the real world i like jays idea of a group trip,(small group)things are slowly changing in Bahia as anyone who has spent time there knows. i feel the days of camping on remote beaches and being able to leave your camp while you spend the day kayaking are ending.we have always remote camped but the last two trips while at remote camps on boat landing type of beaches we have once been hassled by 3 in a truck who tried to pass themselfs off as fishery enforcers collecting fees to use beach,small pay off to end hassle but it does leave a ? in regards to leaving camp without someone to watch ,2nd encounter was army patrol on another beach who flatly told us to pack up and leave beach no reason given,might of been that they had a good reason who knows.i guess what it comes down is we are getting to mellow to put up with worrying about these kind of things .thats is where jays idea is of merit ,a small group give each person the freedom to enjoy the experience without the worry.from reading most of posts on site i get the impression that most of us would respect each others space on a trip like this.possibly if there was any firm interest a weeks trip to bahia gonzaga and area could be sort of a test to see if this could work,one point i would add is that to enjoy a trip to this area 4x4 would almost be required.this being said there are other trips that would not require 4x4 but would probably be of interest to others. ready to listen to everyones input,as to us we are always up for a trip as we control our time and dont have to plan to far ahead.drive slow and enjoy "its the journey"

It seems like the model Sunman is running would handle the wind a bit better than the model I've been using. Maybe not as much actual shade area though.Both are made by Kelty

LaQuinta Les nailed it. There is no question there is safety in numbers albeit small numbers. Especially in the more remote areas. Although where Sun Man went on the Pacific side (Vizcaino) I've never had a problem. Still it would be fun to have a samll group.

Do we still have to call you Sun Man?

How about a trip in Feb to Laguna San Ignacio?

Looks like a great trip.
SWIMPAL, the dogs and I are headed down that way next Tuesday for about 2 weeks.
This trip we are planning on concentrating our travels around Asuncion, Abreojos, Mulege and Bahia Concepcion.
We might be up for a group trip in the future also.
San Ignacio could be fun.
I think a group trip to Las Animas just past BOLA would be a good call for the winter as well. It's somewhat sheltered from the northerly winds.

Gracias..Eureka Dunes, Death Valley area..
We had a great night there star gazing. Nice hike to the top of the dunes for sunrise(alot farther than it looked)
