Bunk Head Room – Fleet VS. Hawk

Great, someone with the same concerns that i have:) The few inches difference is not really a factor for myself. i did notice though, that my kids could sit up in the bunk of the fleet and play cards and board games easily, but not as comfortably in the Hawk. With kids, it could serve as an extra place to hang out before going to sleep, or when the weather turns bad and all parties wanted to be inside. It would leave the dinette area for the adults. It is certainly a trade off, as the Hawk is a little bit roomier and easier to get in and out of. Another factor for me, is that my choice of a Fleet would be matched with a Toyota Tacoma. Much of my research and feedback from others on this site, has lead me to believe that the Tacoma might be too under powered for a camper? This has me looking instead at the Tundra 4x4 TRD model. According the the folks at FWC that would mean i would need to go with the Hawk? If so, then my decision would be made and we would all have to deal with the configurations of the Hawk. If i am wrong would love any additional information that i might be missing.

I too am still researching both the FWC and the best truck to match with one.

In advance, thanks to all who contribute to this site and it's maintenance! It is a wealth of helpful information and an amazing learning tool!!!!!!

^ Welcome to WTW, kgree3 !

You know, I think there are a few folks around using a "smaller" camper on a "bigger" truck. Don't know if FWC would actually refuse to install a new Fleet on a Tundra, but they might sell you one (?). Building a spacer to raise the camper if needed woudn't be too difficult, I wouldn't think.

And I don't know if anyone has had any luck recently asking FWC to build the roof a bit higher (think that was mentioned earlier, this thread. haven't read back). Say you tell them your partner is super tall, or whatever.

Baring that may be contact - wait for it, this is a first time for me ... - ATC.From what I've read on here, they might be willing to accommodate you.

kgree3,
As klahanie indicates, ATC does in fact list taller panels on their option page. In shortbed models, they have the Bobcat for smaller trucks and the Ocelot (for full sized trucks) is available in 72 or 78 inch widths. The Panther is 84" wide. I believe they can make the footpack to match the truck...

They do all sorts of custom work however, they don't do colors :D

THANK YOU ALL! This site is such a find! i am really getting good per-purchase advice. i actually have not purchased a truck yet for the camper. Not fully decided on that part of the system. i am leaning toward the Tundra with TRD package, but they are so much more expensive than the Chevy or Ford. Factors include power to carry the camper and using the truck as a daily driver. i also get requesting custom options on a camper, but would really like to find one already set up with what i want, new or used. Once you start adding and customizing, these things inch up to 30K:(

Curious to hear from others what their setups are with Fleet or Hawk camper and trucks.

Thanks again for all the great advice!
