California 49 through Gold Country

Jeanne and I took a long planned Gold Country trip. Nine days starting at Oakhurst. We used this website for advice on what to see. http://www.historichwy49.com/cities.html. Starting the Tuesday before the 4th weekend we planned on finding National Forest land to stay at. We started at the KOA in Visalia and did not camp at a pay site for five days. It was tricky sometimes to find NF land that was not full of OHV people. We went down some and left for greener pastures. One road was still snow blocked.

We traveled up to highway 50 and decided to split the south to north run. We found an obscure road on the way to Tahoe stayed there and then spent some of the day at Lake Tahoe and then headed north past Truckee. Stayed at a Sugar Pine restoration area. Then we got back on 49 at the north end and started going south.

Every little town had interesting gold country artifacts or buildings. Plus the northern part of the 49 is pretty forest with little to no beetle damage-almost pristine.

Stopped many places but a couple to note. Kentucky Mine Museum - Very intact stamp mill. Mariposa Museum and History Center. Columbia State Historic Park and Museum. Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Was very enjoyable trip. Lots of pictures on my Smugmug site.

Thanks for sharing your trip.
We have traveled through a lot of your trip over the years.
Liked the Calavaras Big Trees pictures.That's one of the special places.We had a cabin
a few miles up the road and would spend a lot of time at the park.
Can't get enough of that SP.

What size truck carries your Lance?
I have looked at the Lance 650 Lite for some time now but
not sure my 2002 Tundra AC TRD would work.

My truck is a 2005 Ram 2500 Diesel. With that setup I can pull the Jeep as well. I had an older Tundra as well with the small V8. Was fine for the FWC Hawk. But not so for towing as well. I can't say I would suggest it for the Lance 650. You are still talking a ton with water and such, I have airbags on the Ram. Lance claims the camper can be put on the F-150. In either case I found the 3/4 ton better for both the FWC and Lance,
