The auto came to Death Valley and vicinity during the first half of the initial decade of the 20th century when the area was electrified with the mining booms of Tonopah, Goldfield, Rhyolite and Skidoo. Horse drawn stages were replaced by speedy autos driven by men such as "Alkali" Bill Brong, who broke many speed records over barely broken two track paths through the desert.
