Fire Ban and gas grills?

We just acquired a small gas grill for use when fire restrictions are in place. Being from the midwest we see far fewer bans then the western states but recently we camped in southern missouri and they are experiencing an extreme drought. I tested my new grill out yesterday at home and added small hickory chips contained within foil to smoke a trout. My question is would this be considered legal during a fire ban?

Most places we’ve been do allow propane type devices to be used outside during fire bans, but it’s always best to check prior to use. One point to know is California requires a permit (free online) for all outside fires, barbecues, etc.. In addition to safety, I believe it’s a way of educating the public.
