One of the most common reasons people carry a fire extinguisher is to deal with a fire in the engine compartment.

An emt guy pointed out to me that an extinguisher of the type that does not have a flexible hose will not allow you to attack a fire from ground level....such as a transmission fire. this is because a non-hose unit must be kept upright.

With no hose you can only spray downward from above and you could not get down beside a vehicle and spray laterally.

Do any of you carry a hose type unit?

how many burn scars do we see on the shoulder of the roads we travel? i see a lot.
 
Some of mine do, some don't. Thats an added advantage of driving a diesel, much less risk of catastrophic fire.
