FWC rear awning

This is the rear awning we made for our camper. An RV dealer gave us an awning from a big 40ft motorhome. It is from Dometic. Bought tracking at Campers World. Used pvc pipe with elbows and riveted it. Then used tent poles from awning corners(pvc elbows) to jack bracket holes. Worked perfect...

Costed $6. Do have to replace the poles. They got rusty cause i didn't take care of them. Much bigger thsan the one FWC looks to be using. It also stays attatched and rolls up. So easy...

Nice job randygirl! How about a picture of it rolled up? Very well thought out. I have no fabrication skills so I just bought one from FWC.

We took the material to an upholstery shop and had them sew edges on. Not much fabrication on my part.

LEADSLED: Did run into one small problem with the wind deflector. It rubbed a small hole in the front of the camper!! Keep an eye on yours. Lots of rough roads.
No biggie... Otherwise, it worked awesome

You mean the wind deflector that I used to have on my Tundra? I don't have a wind deflector on the Ford.

Sorry Leadsled... that was meant for Lighthawk. Got you guys mixed up. But for you, my solar worked awesome. So glad you told me to get that monitor so I would know what was going on. I have so much info... Not organized in how to get it all to everyone... Do know that even in clouds that solar worked. Just needed light amd the right angle of course. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction with that!

So, could you tell how the awning is strapped up there??

The FWC factory awning isn't strapped to the camper when stored. It is rolled up and kept inside the camper. When deployed....the top of the awning is attached by slipping a round whelt into a channel....then the poles go through holes on the end of the awning....then a small strap is tensioned to hold everything in place.
 
ummmmmmmmm....I would think not. But that is just one opinion and you know what they say about opinions...they are just like #$#holes everyone has one. I think there are a few good designs out there and they are fairly easy to implement so why not do it yourself?

Ha! That the problem ... I am not very handy like that nor am I interested. I am really looking for a camper that is ready to go. I find that when when I take projects such as this on it usually takes me 3 times as long and I usually botch it anyway. That is just me. I have learned just to let the pros do a nice job in the first place.
 
Is the Factory rear Awning worth the money?


It was worth it to me since I wanted something that was sturdy and professional looking. The FWC design is very nice and well thought out. I am not much good at fabrication....so I decided to leave it to the pros.

You'll have to be the judge whether it is worth it to you or not. Just look at the pictures in the beginning of this thread and decide if that is what you want your awning to look like and then decide if you can accomplish that yourself or not.

What ever you decide one thing is for sure....it is nice having a rear awning to keep out unwanted rain and sun.

One other thing to consider is how you camp. If you stay in a campground and spend a while setting up camp I would think an awning option would be good to have. But if you are like me and end up camping where ever you end up at night an awning might see less use. Personally I am trying to decide how much I would use an awning, simply because I do not set up a "camp."

That is a good way to approach most of the mods we do or have done to our campers. Myself I would like to see a rear awning option like the one I made ;see rear awning part doux thread.It is simple to open count to six and it's open plus it's mounted on the frame above the door so it can be reached without lowering the top.It came in handy a few times in the rain as it is big enough to protect the door.With it attached to the door area there is no need to fold anything up and find yet another place to store something.IMO
