Outfitter also lifts from the sides but with a slightly different mechanism.

it looks similar to the HECO torsion lift system , imo still the best in use

Note the two pairs of shiny horizontal tubes up against the roof. Those are EMT filled with one very long coil spring. When an end pops off it's a bit like trying to put the Slinky back in the tube under some compression. Banging them while moving around on the upper bed is very noisy!
