Maximum camper size

I am in the process of having a slide-in camper build for a 2022 3500 SLE Double cab, Long bed, 4WD. One questions is what is the largest size that will fit to the end without the tailgate installed?

So if I were to create the largest box 5 feet tall that could slide into the truck bed and just come to the end of the bed with the tailgate removed, would it would be

98.27 inches long ([SIZE=12pt]The inside length of bed is [/SIZE]98.27 in. off a sheet the dealer showed)
and 50.55 in.wide (the inside width between the wheelhousing is [SIZE=12pt]50.55 in.off the same sheet from the dealer).[/SIZE]

A couple of thoughts:

If you are going to be sliding this in and out of the bed, you really can't go 50.55 inches wide. You need a little 'wiggle room'. I think most truck campers are around 48 inches wide.

Why do you want to take your tailgate off? I believe Alaska Campers build models that are longer than 8 foot by having some of it rest on the tailgate.

An 8' camper may extend beyond tailgate closure point due to bump stops at front of camper and a board often needed along front of bed to absorb impact over a larger area, especially if camper bump stops line up with some odd recessed portion of front of bed, and if there's an inward-turned lip around top of bed. Our 8 1/2' Hallmark Ute extends out a little beyond face of bumper on longbed 2020 F350. Before ordering, I'd thought it would stop just behind face of bumper. Width gives me only a couple inches between wheelwells. Being a SuperCab, I can't see out rear window when loading and the center high mounted camera doesn't help much. The more clearance you can allow, the better, and so it'll also fit somebody elses truck when you sell it in future. "Future-proofing."

I ended up with a length of 100" so with trim it is about 102-103. Someone took a picture showing 102" to the end of the tail lights. The tailgate won't be needed to support anything. Just trying to maximize space without any overhang.

Not sure what they chose for width. Will ask.

My Hallmark is 8’6” and fits perfectly fine on an 8’ bed.

Your manufacturer will be able to tell you how much overhangs your camper can support. For example I k ow that Hallmark makes a version of my camper that is for a 6’5” bed so that would be a 2 ft. Overhang.

You want to make sure that the center of gravity is forward of the rear axle.
