Just went to Costco and almost bought a 2.5 inch "gel" memory foam, but decided to ask 2 questions first: 1. does anyone have any experience with the "gel" type memory foam and does it get cold in cold weather? 2. Which is a better size, the 2.5 inch or 3 inch, for comfort and for being able to pull the top down with blankets still left on? Anyone experienced any of this??
Thank you!

Depends upon which camper you have. We've got an '08 Hawk which came with a stock (read hard) 4" foam mattress. What's your rig?

We're able to store bedding, down parkas and what not up there and still pull the top down. Someday I hope to slice off some of the stock foam and add some memory foam or equal.

Spouse & I bought our Hawk last fall 2011 and included the arctic pack for winter adventures. At that time we threw in a 4" memory foam topper (from Costco)for the extra "cush" factor and loved it. However, we were in for a surprise on our first winter trip when we discovered that memory foam freezes hard like a brick. It took about 7 hours for the topper to thaw and soften. Boy howdy, was that a lesson! We live in Alaska and enjoy our winter adventures every bit as much if not more than the summer ones. The memory foam only goes on the latter trips now. BTW, we've tested our Hawk down to -5 and stayed cozy and warm inside. The furnace and arctic pack rock!

Your choice. We have left ours in year round. But it is easy to remove and store - does not take up a great deal of space.
