Hi All,

Gathering my equipment for my solar install on my older NOT pre wired Hawk. I would like to be able to use a portable panel along with the 180w Grape panel I've put on the roof. What kind of port have you used? The Zamp seem better due to 10AWG copper wire, but there is the reversed wiring to correct. Seems most of the others use 12 AWG aluminum wire. Both types seem to have the weak link of the cover 'leash' breaking. Are there other choices out there that I'm missing?

I'm also thinking I'll wire it so the panels are in parallel, but I'm open to thoughts on this.

BTW, I'll be running it all through a Victron MPPT

Thanks for your thoughts!

I bought a Zamp portable without the controller since the rear plug was wired to the controller. I didn't have any wiring issue. I believe that was only with a few campers. I use the portable panel to keep the batteries charged in the winter

The most robust connector I've come across, which I now use for portable solar, trolling motors, etc...is the Power Winch unit. I got the idea from Mike at Master Repair in Florida. Mike has been using this unit for electrical connections for marine applications for 25+ years. I had a unit on my 1999 Hewes Redfisher that lasted 18 years, using it in a saltwater environment.

I seal the wire entry holes with a little UV resistant silicone caulk before screwing down the clam shells.

Male plug
Female socket

This is far more robust then a SAE unit.
