Just got back from the vet after euthanizing Yuma. He came in the house like all was normal but when he got up there was a big blood spot on his bed. Another on the spot he just moved to. Check him out and he's bleeding from his rectum. More blood all over the house as I was googling emergency vets. Strangely enough other than being restless he didn't seem in any distress.

Very nice lady vet says he had a prolapsed something, a mass here, something else that didn't feel right, drops the C word after mentioning ultrasound, xrays, blood transfusions and all that. And he'll probably be incontinent after the surgery which he may or may not survive.

He was pushing eighteen. Had a good life. Glad I got to do one last trip with him this weekend.

I had an old dog and his name was Blue
I had me a dog and his name was Blue
Well I had an old dog and his name was Blue
I'll betcha five dollars he's a good one too
Singing "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

Well, Old Blue's feet was big and round
Old Blue's feet was big and round
Old Blue's feet was big and round
He never 'lowed a possum to touch the ground
Well he treed a possum in a hollow log
You could tell from that he was a good old dog
I said "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

I'll take my axe and I'll take my horn
And get me a possum in the new-grown corn.
Well Old Blue barked and I went to see
And he had a possum up in a tree
Well the possum crawled out on the limb
Blue barked, the possum, possum growled at him
Singing "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

Well Blue what makes your eyes so red
Blue what makes your eyes so red
Blue what makes your eyes so red
You run that possum till you're almost dead
Singing "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

When old Blue died he died so hard
He shook the ground in my back yard
So I dug his grave with a silver spade
and lowered him down with a golden chain
And every link I did call his name
I said "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

Now everytime I hear Blue bark
Everytime I hear Blue bark
Everytime I hear Blue bark
He's treeing possums in Noah's ark
Singing "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

Well I will tell you so you'll know
I'm gonna tell you so you'll know
I'm gonna tell you so you'll know
That Old Blue's gone where the good dogs go
Singing "Ya-ho Blue, you good dog you"

C'mon Blue

My condolences, Craig. That's so sad, so sad to lose your buddy.
But Yuma had a good long life with you, his buddy.
I met Yuma at the October Pork Rally. Good dog.
Close friends of mine had to say goodbye to their old dog this week under similar circumstances -- his name was Blue.

The Lady and I lost our dog to cancer many years ago. It was one of the hardest things we have been through, putting her down. Hang in there.

The Dillards had a little different verse to Old Blue........

when I get to heaven the first thing I'll do
is grab my horn and I'll call for Blue

Aww, Craig, really sorry to hear this. Yuma was a good dog and a great travel partner. He will be missed.

Sad to hear. That's the hard thing about dogs, when they leave. Sounds like he had a great life with you. I usually can't last long without a dog buddy.

Sorry to hear that. I've had to put down too many pets over the years. It's a painful experience for us, but the consolation is that our furry pals are no longer feeling pain.

Craig so sorry for your loss. That is the hard thing about dogs, it's unconditional love but for a short time. I teared up just reading this. The time comes for all of our friends but when it comes for Ryder I know my world will be shaken. Yuma couldn't have asked for a better send off than camping with his best friend one last time. My thoughts are with you.

Take care,

Rich

My sympathies. My worst days were after losing my best buddy Xena a few years back.

This saying meant a lot to me, hopefully for you too Craig:

You have gone ahead
And nothing is the same
Leaving paw prints on my heart
That will always remain

All the best,

Tom

Craig I feel your pain.

Over the years I've had to put down three buddies and it has been one of the most gut wrenching things I've had to do in life. I could never just leave them so staying through the whole process made even more difficult. My two current dogs are seniors and I dread going through this heartache again.

Remember all the good times you two had together.

Thanks for all the kind words. Yes I did have him from a puppy. The girlfriend of of one of my work buddies found some kids kicking a puppy. Not the type to tolerate that she snagged him up. Buddy knew I needed a dog and brought him over. Those lyrics were the Cisco Houston version. There must be hundreds floating around. Hmmm, the google ads are all about dogs. How strange.

I found a link to a YouTube post of the Cisco Houston version of Old Blue:

Sad and beautiful.
