Rubber on door seal

A while back (1 or 2 years) someone on here was trying to find the rubber trim that goes on the inside of the door. Pretty specific item and we couldn't find the right size that would fit the door. It was pretty small to fit into the channel.

We had planned to do a group buy of the stuff that we thought would work but had to buy it in 100yard sizes (I think). We never found anything that worked but thought I'd revive the thread to see if anyone has any ideas on where to get the stuff.

This was for older FWC's (year 2000 - ?) time frame.

I can try to get a photo but it's the seal that fits into the channel fo the door.

I believe this thread from 2010 is the one you are referring to.

You know, I've got to quit reading posts like these. I wasn't even sure what seal you were referring to so walked out to the camper to look. Dang! Something else needs doing! (LOL).

Oops, sorry. Just take a beer with you. Mine's worn down in a few spots (missing actually).

I didn't make out very well on web searches for a replacement bulb seal.

But I did find a Challenger Doors website and their FAQ gave me a contact point for door parts. I sent her an email this morning and will report back when I get a response.

Great. Let's hope for success.

Any updates on the seal? I'd like to add this to my maint. items this winter :).

Yeah, I put in some good research but came back empty. I never did find a bulb seal that had a 2mm flange to slide into my 08 FWC door. Maybe someone else will have more luck.

The contact point said they do not have that bulb seal. I need to follow up, though, on something she said. i think shes recommending a D-shape stick on seal. She said she could send me some but didn't identify it clearly.

I'm on the road and won't get back to it until next week.

Edited to add:

Ah. Found it. Here's what she said:

We do not have anything like that seal that you sent in those picture but I could send you our 109 seal and you could remove all of the seal you have on your door clean it really good and apply the 109 seal. But I know we do not carry the specific seal you are looking for.

So what is a "109 seal"? Perhaps something like this one on Amazon. But a little more searching shows there are at least two adhesives available for these and it's not clear the rubber is always the same. That's what I'll follow up on.

This thread caught my eye finally. I don't have this problem, but have you asked Marty about this.
Since ATC still uses the older style "square" corner door they might be of some help.

Update:

The day before Thanksgiving I left a phone message and sent an email to the parts contact at Challenger Door. She was apparently out for the holiday and replied by email today. She asked how much I needed and said they have a 25-foot minimum and the cost is $1 per foot... but didn't mention whether there's a shipping charge or provide any other info.

I called her after reading that email and asked a few questions:

(1) Did she recommend the seal as a possible solution or a known solution? She says its a possible solution. She had taken the problem to the tech support staff when I first wrote and they said that's what they would use if they were replacing the bulb seal.

(2) Does Challenger make the seal? No, it's a common RV industry product.

(3) Do you know who the manufacturer is? No. The only clue is a parts cross reference JR109H3 (there may be hyphens in there). I was unable to find anything like that on the web (but could order it from Challenger).

(4) Do you know which adhesive the seal has on it? She found something saying the adhesive is H3. (which fits with the cross-reference number she had). (note: I asked this question because I see 109-profile D-seals at Trim-Lok, for example, can be bought with no adhesive, with 'HT' adhesive, or with 'BT' adhesive.

(5) What is the shipping cost? She will submit my address info to the shipping department for a quote but she thinks it will be about $10.

So, where are we?

It's not certain the recommendation of a 109 profile D-seal is a good one but it's a probably worth a try, particularly if your seal is very bad. The width of almost 5/8" seems like it's kind of wide but appears to fit. It's difficult to tell how the EPDM material of the seal would handle the slot-extrusion we no longer use when switching from the bulb seal to a glue-on D-seal.

Another important consideration is the adhesive. If you buy the JR109H3 seal from Challenger, you get an H3 adhesive, which is rubber-based. If you buy Trim-Lok's X109HT seal, you get a standard pressure-sensitive (acrylic) adhesive (I believe this is an 'H2' adhesive). And if you buy Trim-Lok's X109BT, you get 3M's Bonded Tape adhesive.

This Trim-Lok Rubber Seal video is useful for understanding differences in the HT and BT adhesives as well as preparation steps for installation.

PS- I also called All Terrain Campers today. They don't have the bulb-seal stock either. They also said the door on my 2001 may be a Dexter. I'll give them a try too.

New news!

This morning I contacted Dexter Doors and may have found a source for the bulb seal stock.

I was referred to Suz-anne Ritter in the Pricing department who gave me some interesting info.

First, my door wouldn't be a Dexter because Dexter wasn't making doors in 2001. But she said it might be a Philips and Dexter took over the Philips door-manufacturing business and tooling.

She said if the door assembly has a screen, the manufacturer's name is typically embossed into the white plastic slider. I had replaced my slider with a clear one but have the old one in a storage box downstairs. I took a quick look with her on the line and let her know it is indeed a Philips. Here's a photo of the slide:

DoorSlidePhilips.jpg

I described the seal, gave approximate dimensions, and the fact that it was on a 2001 Four Wheel Campers unit and gave her my email address.

Ten minutes later I received this email:
-------------

I think this is the seal you are looking for. The part number is 2200-06 and it goes on the perimeter of all the 5050SQ series doors. It’s a whopping 2¢ per inch but we charge a minimum of $15 for shipping. You might try to find something similar in size – surely there’s a “seals r us” type of website out there.
You may order directly from us by calling (574) 848-4491 x213 (Marty) or x215 (Adriana) x234 (Nancy).

----------------

I went ahead and ordered a few minutes ago by calling one of the customer service extensions she provided. I'll post again once I get the seal and compare it to the original on my door. I also confirmed that the $15 shipping fee is good not only to my address here in PA but also to the west coast (but I didn't think to ask about Canada).

I hope it works... you could have asked for a sample? to see if it works and then we could have all pitched in and got 100' of the stuff :).

Let us know and thanks again for doing this. I bet it works but I'll have to convert inches to mm.

Did it arrive and does it fit?

I've not received it yet so called customer service rep at Dexter a few minutes ago. The shipment is scheduled for tomorrow, (Tuesday December 6). I ordered it last Tuesday so I'm guessing their order system schedules the ship-date for a week from order-date.

She said it will take a few days to get to me. My camper is parked here in the driveway so I'll be able to compare the bulb seal to mine right away.

PS- I mentioned last time I had forgotten to ask about cost of shipments to Canada (in case it fits and any Canadian WTW members want to order). I asked this time but the answer wasn't very satisfying. The customer service rep said it doesn't apply and she doesn't know what the cost would be. She'd have to get that from Shipping when the order is placed.

A suggestion... If this is the correct size, and multiple folks need it, a 'group' buy might be in order. That would save the $15 USD for each order. Yup, I'm being cheap, but that shipping fee is pretty high for what's being shipped.

One person could order, the others could reimburse appropriately.

Yes you are! You can't fix much on a camper for under 20 bucks! Remember, someone has to write the order, someone has to invoice the order, someone has to pull the order, some has to pack and ship the order. Not real difficult to have 20 minutes into a .25 cent sale plus the actual shipping charges which could be $6 depending on the carrier. Hate to think how much Old Crow has invested already!

Good news....

I received the bulb seal stock today and as far as I can tell it's a duplicate of the original.

Here's a photo of cross-sections of the old (from my 2001 Hawk) and the new one from Dexter:

BulbSeal.jpg

I went ahead and replaced the seal around my door this afternoon. I was at first unsure how to go about it and wasted some time trying to figure out if I could use a Dremel wheel to make a few judicious cuts to allow the old pieces to slide out without taking the door apart.

Ultimately, I gave up on that and removed the door from its hinges, then removed the top extrusion and loosened the bottom one far enough to allow the old seal to be slid out and the new slid into place.

I had no problems with screw removal. Most had somewhat-rusty heads and I made sure my philips screwdriver fit well before trying. The inner screw ends have the self-drilling ends so at first they screw out normally but then just seem to hang there, waiting to be picked out.

The extrusions fit tightly but there was no adhesive or sealant. I also had to remove the door-holder fitting from the front side of the top extrusion.

The old seal was hard and slid out easily. The new one is more flexible and some care is needed to get it into place. The newer rubber was quick to catch on the sharp edges of the extrusion as I fed it in.

Everything went back together quite easily and remounting the door on its hinges was also easy.

PS- The seal is sold by the inch. I ordered enough to do the job twice or 288 inches (24 feet) (just to have some spare available). They actually sent 360 inches (30 feet). Also- I'm not quite sure what happened on my bill. I was told I'd be charged $5.76 plus $15 shipping or $20.76. I see my credit card was actually charged $22.01. The package didn't include a receipt so I'm not sure why at this point.

So awesome. I need some and am going to order. I'll do a group buy and mail it out as quickly as possible but I'd need to hear who wants how much, etc. before figuring out what the cost would be and I'd have to have money sent via paypal (paypal fees would be added to the cost, along with postage, etc.). My biggest concern is that I'm not sure what I'd package this in as I doubt that it'd fit in a regular, large envelope that I have.

If you are interested, let me know and I'll figure out if I want to do this. If I don't get enough interest in the next few days I'm going to order myself as I am leaving on a trip for a month (in about a month).

Kevin

I will participate in group buy . My '04 hawk looks the same. Thanks for the effort
