Hello WTW Enthusiasts!
The following site has been added to our list of really cool places in the western US!
Eastern Sierras / Mammoth Lakes
Folks have already started adding photos and comments! From afar, it looks like a fantastic area to explore! My feature pic of the week is from the Devils Postpile National Monument (courtesy of NPS.gov):
Not only is columnar basalt so intriguing because of its dense formation and geometric cooling joints, this particular area was scoured by the latest glaciation, forming the smooth surface on the upper surface of these columns.
A few weeks ago I went climbing in the lower gorge at Smith Rocks and we ended up climbing through the joint between basalt columns (called a chimney). It was definitely one of the coolest climbs ever- we wore headlamps as we stemmed our way to the top of the route. Picture below (at this point, we have brought the rope over the column to climb the columns adjacent to the chimney)! Ok, enough geology-nerding for me! Have a good weekend! ~TDawg
