Thanks for the photos of Tallac...brought back some great memories. I spent a bunch of time going up and down that mountain when I was working on Angora Cr. I should really get up there again.

Today, the last day of spring, was the first day of >80 temperatures at my place -- 81° to be exact.
Even though we had a cold/wet spring I still don't welcome summer temperatures. Bend rarely reaches 100°, 90 is considered hot here, but if I had my way it would never get hotter than 80.
Some people are never satisfied, are they?

Local friends and I have a summer solstice tradition:
After work (if any) we drive to the north summit, 6400', of Pine Mountain (25 miles east of Bend) and watch the solstice sunset. We've done this for at least 20 years, though I've missed a few years.
It's cool to watch the lengthening shadows reveal texture in the lava flows in the surrounding Millican Valley 2000 feet below, distant lights of the central-Oregon "metro area"...and early darkness/stars. With food and drinks, of course. It's a great 300° view. Being Central Oregon, it's usually chilly/cold at 6000+ feet in late June, sometimes cloudy and sometimes windy...but it's always worthwhile.
This is a popular hang-glider/para-glider launch spot, but we've (almost) never had to share this great spot on this special night.

Mark, great way to celebrate the solstice! We get an occasional invite from the High Priestess of Compost to join in on the pagan solstice ritual. Haven't been bold enough to attend and lacking a virgin to sacrifice......................Of course, just kidding on the latter. Summer is here and we are heading up the mountain to celebrate!

The co-pilot and I broke out of our normal routine yesterday and headed out for a solstice hike in Matilija Canyon above Ojai last night, capped it off with a swim in a nice water hole around 8 pm, just what the doctor ordered...Bring on Summer!

Same here. We had to go down the hill yesterday afternoon to pick up the Lady's car, in for some minor repair. Had to use the AC in the truck down there. It was warm.

It's 91F and predicted to reach 99F today in Sacramento.
We're heading down to the South Yuba to our favorite swim hole tomorrow.
Don't know if I'll jump in or not. It's high, fast and cold. Maybe I'll just splash in the shallows
I just read that there have been five drownings in the foothill rivers (Yuba, American, etc.) over the last weekend. We lose a few kids every year on the Yuba when it gets hot and the rivers are in full flood. It's really sad, especially when it is so predictable.
Last year we saved a drunk young woman who had been swept away. She had bounced into rocks and was giving up when we saw her submerge into a pool right before our eyes. She was with a bunch of idjits from Marysville who had come to the river to party and decided to wade across the swollen river. After drinking all day in the sun, they attempted to wade back across. The river took her, and she pulled away so fast they couldn't run fast enough to catch her. I caught her before the next rapids and laid her up on a warm slab. I checked her for broken bones and concussion. She was hypothermic, bruised and up-chucking water, but recovered in about half and hour. I think one of the crew either fractured or severely sprained his ankle in the process.
We escorted them back to the trail head, just before dark. Some people just don't belong in the backcountry where Darwin can exact his toll.

Sounds like what happens -- too often -- in summer on the Sandy River, just east of Portland, near where it joins the Columbia. Drunks and other fools who want to cool off and underestimate the river.

Cumulus buildup today in the Sacramento mountains and even a brief thunderstorm with rain!!! I think the monsoon is just around the corner now. Hope for more rain and less lightning, so the firefighters can catch a break.
