Steens Mountain, Oregon - July 2020

I worked at San Jose State when the Steens Mountain Wilderness was first being processed. One of my tasks was to respond to Forest Service stuff on behalf of the student body. I remember the issue and especially the descriptions and photos of the area. I have never been there.

It is now on my short list.

I recommend several trips during different seasons. Mid May through Mid June catches the bird migration, summer finds the wildflower bloom traveling up the mountain, and the fall colors in the aspen groves can be spectacular.

Like every place in the West! :)

Oh the Steens. Last we were there we tried to summit and hike to the lake, but the first snows of fall prevented that. I have hiked Big Indian twice, but haven't been able to visit in the summer, so have had to sidehill as crossing the stream was too dangerous with spring runoff. Every place is beautiful and special there. Thanks for taking us along, even seeing places I've been, but not been to at the same time of year are a special treat, so thanks for taking the time for the write up and photos. Maybe someday (1296 days at last count) I'll be able to hit the road in the summer to places like this.
