I noticed in the Air Conditioner thread that some of you are using those little (but not cheap!) Swampy swamp coolers. What are your opinions on the things? How do Swampies work inside our pop-up campers? Any photos of them set up and running?

Thanks.

I have one too and have only used it a couple of times. But frankly, I haven't been very impressed even tho I been using it in the perfect climate - very dry. CJ8 and chnlisle, maybe you can tell me what I might be doing wrong. Where do you put the unit and which direction do you point it? Do you use ice? Do you use the aux water fill connection?

You might be expecting too much of it. It will never be like refrigeration but it lowers ambient to an acceptable temp when its broiling out. It helps at night as well.

I also mainly use it by sitting or laying in the airflow from it... I'm not using to cool the whole camper like an AC unit would. I do often use it in conjunction with the fantastic fan in the vent to suck out the warm air and get a cross breeze through the camper.

While not camping, I have used it in the garage to make working on various things more enjoyable in the AZ heat.

Has anyone ever installed a turbokool on a fwc or atc? They are "only" 16 lbs, and fit any 14x14 vent, will run indefinitely with a panel. As I am still a poser ( still waiting for the perfect used fwc to pop up, yuk yuk) I have no idea if lifting another 16 lbs is possible without a lift assist device.

There are also solarchill 12v swamp "vehicoolers". Way back in the day I had a small solar chill which I used while shell camping in the back of my 89 yota in Utah. I found I got too cold with it blowing on me, sold it to a friend and went with a fan instead.

In europe Waeco sells a 800 watt 18 kg rooftop ac that runs off 24v. Obviously one would still need a generator, but it has to be asked why don't they sell these stateside? Because yanks only want the biggest and bestest, no matter how inefficient.
