Next week, the first full week of [meteorological] autumn in Bend, has 3 days in a row of highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s.

And that sounds like fall to me.

Nice to hear our local (Bend, OR) TV (KTVZ) news weather-talker (not a meteorologist) actually knows the meteorological seasons!

And she's not afraid to say it. :)
However...in about 3 weeks I expect she'll make a reference to the "the Official start of fall"...

Our area's forecast is for the hottest Labor Day Weekend in history. This will add extra numbers to the hordes already flocking to our mountains, lakes, and reservoirs. Throw in extreme fire conditions and I am very concerned and worried. Wish us luck.

Our welcome into Fall -

83 here in Calgary. That qualifies as a hot mid-summer temperature, not early September. Not complaining though!

We have a Red Flag Warning here in Central Oregon...but it expires early Saturday morning. Just one very-hot day -- today -- here.

We are worried too. Currently 100 degrees and 20 mph winds. Go bags and pet carriers are ready - but then again we have lived this way since 2020. May we all make it through.

The new normal. We consider 90° sweltering hot here at home. In the first 30 years we lived in our mountain home, the highest temperature we ever saw was 95°. Two years ago, we saw one day at 96°. Last year, a new record high for us skyrocketed to 99°. Today, our thermometer recorded a new record, 102°. My god, it is HOT!!!!

I'm hearing thunder right now... And though it didn't get as hot as forecast today, it's been mostly hot and dry for weeks.

I expect a few fires will be lightning-sparked this evening.

:(

A couple of nights ago I deployed the comforter on my bed for the first time in months.
Downtown yesterday at 1pm I saw a guy wearing a quilted jacket -- zipped up. (though he was still wearing shorts)
Tonight I'm wearing socks in the house - instead of my usual barefootedness - for the first time in months. (though I'm still wearing shorts and a short-sleeve T-shirt)

We have light rain this morning! Hopefully it will help with the fires, and what a delight to smell clean air, wet grass and the sagebrush.

I can see snow on the mountains from my kitchen table.

Guess I better work on getting the rest of the harvest in. I'll start some sauerkraut and hot pepper sauce fermenting today, get some bell peppers in the freezer and make a big pot of pozole. I already have 8 quarts of fermented kosher dills in the frig and 12 pints of bread and butter pickles in the pantry as well as several half pints of pesto and a gallon of roasted Numex chiles in the freezer. And I've already raided the potato patch once. And near the end of August I was FINALLY getting some cherry tomatoes - doesn't look like the Romas are going to ripen before a freeze. Between the cold, wet spring and the major increase in rodents it was a difficult year in the garden.

edit to add: garlic and onions were harvested a month ago

Yesterday evening I turned the central furnace on in my house for the first time since late spring.

Oh. I am just at the point of maybe shutting some windows at night because of cold instead of smoke.
