Has anyone mounted a 12 volt powered PTZ camera on their vehicle?
I am looking for a camera I can mount on the roof which I can operate from the cab and connect to my backup camera monitor (it can accept one more camera input) or to my passenger side dash mounted laptop.
The IR and zoom features would be useful for visually investigating the road ahead as well as campsites and turn-out to the side of the truck. It would also be great for viewing as well as recording wildlife and other things in the distance without having to stop and get out a pair of binoculars or a camera.
If a weather resistant PTZ mount were available for a gopro type camera that would be a viable option but I have not found one yet.
So far I have been looking at home surveillance type cameras but the field of view of most of them is a bit too wide which limits useful range to a hundred feet or so. I would like to be able to zoom in on something five hundred feet or more away.
A desirable additional feature would be a spotlight that points with the camera. Not sure such a set-up exists for sale to the public (I have seen this on military and police vehicles but the units look quite expensive) but I am sure some adventurers have thought of this and have probably rigged something up.
Thoughts on this are solicited
BTW: This is motivated by my upcoming drive to Alaska in late August (returning early October).
