That's a good point, but I wasn't sure if a Hawk would fit in an 8' bed. Wings/wrap/etc? Anyway, it's gone now. After going through a couple weeks of MUST-HAVE-FWC-NOW angst, I'm exercising patience and saving up for a Grandby within a day's drive (which is anything from Sacramento north to Canada and east to Boise/Reno).

That didn't have wings did it? Folks put hawks in 8' beds from time to time and either leave room in the back of the truck for stuff or mount the camper back flush in the truck and have storage in front of it.

Wasn't there just a 2000 grandby in federal way, WA a few weeks ago? Did you look into that one? Would have only been 2hr drive approximately.


That's a great idea about mounting it forward in the bed. A little back porch could be handy.

And yes, the Federal Way one was a little out of my price range. I'm really kicking myself over the one in Salem Oregon for $1000 that the guy literally sold from under me while I was driving down to buy it. Actually I'm really wishing I could kick him.
 
This one is going down in price, first $6800, then $5900. I think he bought it in January for $5000 though, see pg 20 in this thread.

I am new to the site and have been doing some research on buying a FWC for my 1997 Toyota T100. I have thought about holding out and waiting for the perfect fit-Kestrel, but am getting antsy and was wondering if anyone out there knows if a 1992 Ranger would fit my truck, as well as one of the more recent postings such as the Grandby? Is there somethings that would be compromised such as roominess in the camper or smoothness of ride if I were to go with a different FWC than the Hawk/Kestrel? Or should I just be patient and hold out? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had similar feelings and have decided to only buy a Hawk or Kestrel for my Tundra. Not wanting something that may fit- but not as it should -and I do not want to have anything longer than the bed that requires the tailgate to be left on. Would also consider the right ATC- but they are even more scarce. So I just figure that sooner or later the right one will come along.

But hey don't get in my way- cause I am way overdue for mine :LOL: just kidding- good luck on your search.

Long or short bed T100? From what I know the Grandby may be too big/heavy for a T, your mileage may very. If the Ranger has "wings" or tail lights you may have to cut the wings off or let it hang out past your bumper. I passed on a 91 Ranger for that issue, as well as others, some would say not to.

It is a short bed - 6 ft. Thanks for the tip on the Grandby, I dont want to be weighing down my truck too bad. How much of a job is cutting off the wings- I would probably keep them on it just in case I decide to sell or upgrade at some point. On a different note regardless of what FWC I buy will I want to invest in air bags?

Oh the trials of craigslist. It sold today right from under my nose while I waited for a return call from the seller.


Sorry - I bought it! I got a hold of them on 8/27 and looked at it/picked it up on the 31st.

It is a 1993 and I had to remove the aluminum wings and do some super minor sheetmetal work to make it fit my 1995 Dodge. The 'wings' come off with a 1/4" nut driver and the sheetmetal can be cut with a utility knife and bent by hand, no fancy tools required - although I did use a cordless drill.

To make you feel better it is in need of some TLC and work and probably another $1000.

It wasn't very clean and the jacks are rusty and the jack attachments plates on the camper are in teriible shape with the rear ones almost coming off :eek:. The front plates are too narrow to clear the fenders on my truck - sot hey had to be modified.

The fridge doesn't work - and the furnace doesn't work. It was super dirty and took my wife almost a full day to scrub clean and wash all the fabric covers.

No aux. battery The rear outside light was broken. There was a hole in the front skin below the window. There are small cracks in the corners of the canvas.

And the list goes on and on....

Ah-hah! I'm glad to see a fellow WtW-er bought it. If you find that the work is too much for you, I will gladly take it off your hands :)

That one looks like it doesn't have the rear bulges in the back (whatever you want to call them) which is interesting. Although the step up is likely too wide for modern truck it might be worth having the seller throw a tape measure on the two widths (lower and upper portion) to see what the numbers are in case this is an oddball specialty sized camper (just going out on a limb due to it not appearing to have the normal floor pack in the rear).

You're talking about the red and yellow lines I've drawn on the picture, right? The yellow line would have to fit inside my tailgate opening and between the bed rails and the red between the wheel wells, right?
