This thread is worth reading all the way through:

The main point is the AWESOME customization this guy did on the Earthroamer XV-JP. The secondary point is - It's pretty hard to believe how many serious shortcomings the 100k+ Earthroamer XV-JP has. Yikes.

man I can't imagine spending all that money for that thing and then having to dump it in again just to make it right......Makes me even happier with my simple little welded aluminum frame slide-in camper made by the guys at ATC :D

Anybody else ever wonder why the Expedition West XV-JP ended up back at ER?

Very cool idea - but for 10% of the cost (or less) I have more space, more power, better mileage, more easily modified, etc, etc, etc. Thanks FWC!

Anyone know the guy that owns this thing? It has Oregon plates on it.

Here might be a cheaper camper option, and if you decide to sell the camper it will move over to a Tacoma truck as well.

But I think the Jeep Brute Conversion is a bit pricey.

This XV-JP is owned by a gentlemen named Mike Hiscox, who has a fleet of expedition type vehicles, including the Toyota Tacoma once owned by Expeditions West owner Scott Brady, which Brady has taken from the Arctic Circle down to the Darien Gap.

Hiscox purchased the XV-JP off ebay from an auto dealer in PA, with about 4,000 miles on it. He then hired an Expedition Portal member to drive it from PA to OR for him last year. It has been undergoing an extensive remodel since.

I asked Brady last December why his XV-JP went back to Earthroamer and it was due to what he felt like, were areas that had room for improvement after he took it through Central America with his wife for a few months. He stated the Jeep foundation did great, no problems there. Speaking to others who have traveled with XV-JP owners, I have heard comments like "gutless pig", "too heavy for the Jeep drivetrain", etc.

As a concept vehicle, I thought it was a brilliant all-inclusive package with so many possibilities. However, having seen a few of them up close, I was stunned by the minimal interior space and awkward tent design... I think it is a project that still has a tremendous upside after some fine tuning & tweaking. People will always debate the purchase price of products from Earthroamer. I won't because lots of things these days are overpriced IMO. It's worth whatever someone will pay for it.

Here's another Earthroamer XV-JP I saw in Silverton, CO last September during the WTW Rally. I talked with the owners and they had also driven it to Central America. They were quite pleased with it overall.

Hi Stan,
That is such a great set-up ! Thank you for posting the photos ! ! !
Is it a Finch with extended cabover, please ?
Thanks,
Frank

Well said, KC !
Mike is indeed a gentleman and is very helpful with answering all sorts of questions, very patiently.
You mentioned it is a bit cramped inside the XV-JP and I wanted to also mention that Mike has removed the interior along with the cassette potty and plans to put in a new interior layout. I think we all sort of knew he was up to something, after he said that the minute he opened the (original) tent, it started raining (Oregon) and did not stop, not allowing him to be able to even dry it out...
Cheers,
Frank

While I'll admit the new Jeeps have a bit more room than mine, I still think its the wrong platform for an expedition vehicle. Let a jeep do well what it does, but thats not long extended trips. My opinion fwiw.
