Too many weird things pop up when searching for "Mermaid Steens Mountains" -- but nothing about the MoW. A hundred years from now it may be a folktale whispered around campfires -- like the Wendigo.

I wonder about whirling disease in the trout? Bad news for the lake if so. But really, what I hoped for was an update on the Mermaid of Wildhorse Lake situation!

I think we agree that brook trout introduction was a mistake. I know a lot of the IDFG folks -- they are working hard to restore native fish populations and stave off invasives and "bucket biologist" introductions. It is an uphill battle, but they are very good at what they do.

They are planted then allowed to eat everything they can for a couple of years. The fish grow to a nice size but after another year or so you have skinny fish with big heads due to starvation. A year or so later there are no fish. After a few years when food builds up again another batch will be...

White flower looks like Mountain Deathcamas - Anticlea elegans (formerly known as Zigadenus elegans.) Look but don't eat! The yellow flower may be Pteronia, one of the numerous members of the Asteraceae family. Great hikes and fishing!

Last year we spent much of our three plus weeks above 8,000 feet, up to over 11,000 feet on Mt Ellen in the Henry mountains. But... we live at sea level (210 ft asl, actually) so we knew to spend at least 4 to 5 days above 4,000 ft to let our bodies acclimate. We were breathing deep for oxygen...
