RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Cell phone coverage

I had ATT for several years, then switched about 8 years ago to Consumer Cellular. They use either ATT or Tmobile towers (you choose the type of chip - can be different chip for different phones on a family plan). MUCH cheaper than the major carriers (I pay about $80/month for three phones)...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Spike in visitors to DVNP

Statistics I saw were relatively constant numbers over the course of a year. Summer visitors tend toward shorter visits.

Klanahie mentioned Atlin. We live there in the summer (May through September), so if you want to stop by, let me know and we could give you some local pointers.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Am I out of luck with 1,200 lbs of payload?

ATC Cougar (8 ft. long, cabover) on my F150. Started as a shell with furnace and cookstove. At that time, weight was under 1000 lbs (9xx, I don't recall exactly). I've added a bit but I'm sure it's still well under 1200 lbs. Rides fine on the F150 without any suspension modifications (but...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Pink antifreeze in cassette toilet tank ok?

Never tried it, but its common in the big box RVs to use over winter. I do it in my cabin, including washing machine, over the winter and never had any issues. Stuff is designed to not attack plastic and rubber parts. I would think it should be fine.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Inexpensive under bed cushion air-flow ideas?

Just ordered some dri-dek. Cheaper to order through their website than amazon. Better to support the "little guy" as well, although everyone's smaller than amazon.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Sleeping quarters orientation

If you're into building your own, you can build out a camper to have N-S (parallel to truck bed) arrangements. I built out an ATC to have two singles, one on either side of the camper. Under the bed in the main part of the camper are the refrigerator on one side and a small closet on the...

Wow, those are pricey. We have the Harbor Freight version which is a bit smaller but was only about $30.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Brophy, Torklift, or what? Overwhelm setting in!

I have the torklift on the front (and custom-built tiedowns on the back) and they don't stick out that far to be worried about if you modify them by drilling an extra set of holes. They are very robust, I would not worry about them failing anywhere off-road - the camper will fail first. I have...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ford Aluminum Beds - any issues installing FWC?

You can use the Torklift system on the FWC (Torklift is a bit pricey, though) by bolting to the jack leg points. Means you have to take the jacks off, which I think is a good thing anyway.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ford Aluminum Beds - any issues installing FWC?

Our ATC is on a 2015 F150 with the aluminum bed. We used Torklift frame-mounted tiedowns in the front, and I custom fabbed a steel tiedown for the rear (it is bolted to the frame). Not the standard mount, but I've found the bed to be pretty robust so would not worry about either an ATC or FWC...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Alaska - how late is too late in the season

Lived in AK a few years, currently have a cabin in far NW BC. That time of year will be fine for a camper, perhaps even ideal. Bugs mostly dead, colors spectacular in many places, and generally low traffic compared to midsummer. Although it may snow, shouldn't stick much and unlikely to be a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tired of High Tech

If only the manufacturers put a tiny bit of their (huge) profits on trucks into some user-friendly software, it would help a lot. I cannot believe how bad the Ford Sync system is - seems like a computer system from 1982. I would love to buy something without the computer, without the bells and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Quick easy spot for nights sleep Nevada I-80 exit 205

Similar spot at Mote exit a bit further east, head south a mile or so to get away from the traffic noise. At least it was ok several years ago when I used it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wind Deflector

Thinking about a camper mount, since that is the only time I would use it. Downside is that it needs to be designed to not scrape and scratch the truck cab, so careful design is necessary.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Utah to Prince Rupert Canada and Back

In BC along your potential route, showers are available at Juniper Beach Prov Park (W of Kamloops) and Tyhee Lake near Smithers. For more info on the various Provincial Parks, go to the Parks BC website, but those two are the ones I know of with shower facilities.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Drilling into the camper

Anybody try using a studfinder? I would think that the aluminum studs would be higher density than the rest of the walls, but maybe not enough difference to show up on a studfinder (I'm thinking the Zircon density type, not just a simple magnet).

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Camping along the Loneliest Hwy?

There are spots in the Toiyabe range S of Austin, but a bit off the road. Either dispersed camping or some USFS campgrounds (don't know whether they will be open when you are that way). Bob Scott is usually closed until sometime in May, but you can get in even if it is closed. Near Ely, there...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Air compressor lift system for roof

I built a "chuckwagon" mobile kitchen several years ago that was about 12x8 feet and we found some small-diameter air cylinders that we operated on a fairly small air pump (similar in size to the automotive cheapies). Took only a minute to raise the roof (which was probably 150 lbs) and all the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Low-temp thermostat

Would like to replace our thermostat on the ATC with 1) something more robust and 2) something that will allow us to set a low-end temperature around 30-32 degrees (most thermostats have a 40 degree low end). Any suggestions out there?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Firearms into Canada

Yes, be sure to look through the requirements - there is a barrel length requirement. Also a $25 fee to be paid at the border for each time you cross, so if you go to Alaska, expect (may not always happen but expect it) to pay the fee twice, once going north and once coming back into Canada...
