RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Ultimate Solar Thread

#8 or #10 x 3/4 self drilling screws would be just fine. They tend to give a tighter hold rather than pre-drilling, since the drill size is just right. You MUST find the frame tube for mounting. To do that may require that a piece of angle or sq. tubing be added between the roof and the panel...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Drilling into camper from outside

A stud finder may work better on the inside and then you could make some measurements to match it to the outside. The frame pics are helpful, but not always with older models. Anything you mount outside must be into the frame. The skin just won't hold up much. The #8 self drilling screws work well.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Making Curtains

I (well not I, but the wife/kid) are going to make new curtains. I have all of the track made and now need to start sewing. I have a continuous plastic strip with the tabs attached, as shown. I just don't know quite how the strip is sewed onto the curtain or what it should look like after...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West power usage

Yes. The inverter itself consumes power and the larger they are, the more it uses. I have done some load testing between a 300 watt and an 800 watt to run my Sat. dish and TV. Almost an amp more using the 800. An inverter should really be sized to match the load you want to power.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Water seepage

Nothing leaks/drips. It just gets damp/wet along the bottom of the vinyl siding. Only where the sleeping bags or pillows touch it. Just like a tent; stays dry until you rub up against the side, then it wicks thru. Jeff

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Water seepage

Was camping in a heavy rain this weekend. The roof and siding do not have any leaks. But, what did happen is that it seemed as if the water wicked thru the siding along the bottom. This happened all around the bed area, but not in the rest of the camper. I rolled up towels and placed them...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Rebuilding a Granby

Excellent work! FWIW regarding mounting- Mine is secured with (4) #5 3/8 bolts in each corner thru the floor. Fender washers on the top side and a 3x5x.18thk backing plate on the bottom under the bed. Also, a rubber bed mat under the camper. It has never moved. ~DR

Wow, you are ambitious! Others have done re-builds with good results so hang with it. I have the exact same camper, an '86 Grandby (even the plaid upholstery) in very good condition. If there is anything I can offer as to pics, details or mods, let me know. Have fun! ~DR

Hi Mark, I think am am trying to be a bit lazy and hoping someone will say-"get this one, it's perfect".... (If I start trying to figure lumens, color, etc., I'll never get one.) Know the feeling?

What is the recommended LED porch light? Just a nice white (not blinding) light to light the area. A search turns up so much, it's hard to decide. Don't want to start a new discussion, just a good recommendation. Thanks all, ~DR

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bathroom area in older FWC?

Also, be sure that the replacement camper will fit your truck bed. Trucks and campers have changed sizes a lot during the 90's. FWC has a good fitment chart on their web site. ~DR

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ''Siphoning'' Propane?

I do it all the time. Fill a 1-1/2 gallon tank from a 5 gallon. I have a hose with 2 male fittings on it. Hang the big tank upside down, open both valves and open the vent screw until vapor comes out. Remember, LPG is a liquid and that is what you are transferring. I verify how full it is on a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Jerry Can in Your Truck Camper?

I was just measuring, and it looks like I'll have about 1" clearance between the bottom edge of the rotopax and the back window of the cab. I think that is probably enough to accommodate flex of the truck, anyone think differently? You would be surprised how much flex there is. You don't...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Rear springs instead of airbags for the F150 FWC? camper!

Steel trumps balloons every single time!!!! I had Firestone bags on my 05 CTD dually. What a PITA. Leaking lines and splitting bags. That is good advice. Properly made springs will always be better and don't leak. Don't bother to re-arch springs, it will not last and is a waste of your $$. ~DR

We like the couch arrangement-not for the table set-up, but for the storage below. Hi-lift, tools, the stuff you just need close by. If I could keep the storage and have a dinette, it would be perfect. Still need to find a place for the port-o-potty. ~DR

Well, you all got me thinking about cowboy coffee and a simpler way to approach life's little pleasures. I had heard of various ways of making cowboy coffee. This is the simplest I found with a little Internet poking about. Cowboy Coffee I will give this try this afternoon. That's the way I...

If your ever need to replace it while it is still under warranty, Interstate dealers are going to be much easier to find. Especially if your are on the road. I just put two (850CA) Ford Motorcrafts in my truck at $97 ea. The date code on my last ones were 01/2001. Now that's long life!

There is a place in Santa Ana called Deaver Spring. They are fairly well known and can tell you what needs to be done. It is worth a call. Replacement, heavy duty springs were not all that much as I recall. They do have distributors around but it's best to work with the factory...
