RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Condensation - Roof Vents - windows

Some condensation is inevitable, we made a reflectix artic pack which helps a lot but adequate ventilation is critical. Except in the coldest weather (20's and below) we almost never close the window at the very front of the camper with the two of us and a large dog on board. We heat with a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Emergency/Comm Radio Solo Camping

JHa6av8r, I have an SEL certificate but haven't flown in years, I also haven't used an aviation handheld. Do you think that you could reach another ground based station that wasn't line of sight with one? I was thinking it might be better to try to contact a flying aircraft to relay emergency...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Emergency/Comm Radio Solo Camping

DT, I've had my Gen1 Spot for years now and although I've never used the SOS function, I've used the OK hundreds of times and it has never let me down. I would think the Gen3 would be just as reliable. The PLB I have is a Mcmurdo Fastfind 210 but it looks like they have replaced it with the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Emergency/Comm Radio Solo Camping

Well a handheld aircraft radio is one possibility, not sure of the legality but I don't think that would matter in the case of a true emergency. The other choices that I use are a Spot tracker and a PLB. The Spot costs $100 a year but gives you the option of sending out OK messages to...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Does anybody use skid plate or rock sliders

My Frontier came with a couple of thin sheet metal "Skid plates". Even my buddy's Nismo Frontier had the same crap. The lower radiator and transfer case are both just waiting to get busted. I found Shrockworks http://www.shrockworks.com/ which provides bomber protection and I added the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Help with wiring Grandby to Tundra

Check the voltage to the camper battery when the truck is running, should be over 12V, if not there is a wiring problem or a blown fuse.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West First trip to DVNP questions

There is plenty of DV to explore on pavement so you'll enjoy it no matter what. Check road conditions and if Titus Canyon is in good shape then do it, it'll give you a chance to reprovision in Beatty and if graded recently almost any vehicle can do it, just take your time. Are you coming into...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Outdoor shower worth it?

Solar shower, we hang it off a tree or the camper, heat water on stove if cloudy.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Dometic CoolFreeze Portable Refrigerator Freezer CF-18 CF-018DC

I bought the Dometic cf-18 and installed a solar panel and battery system to run it. It's been up and running now for 4 days and seems to work great.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West First trip to DVNP questions

Don't know if I missed it but what kind of tires do you have? The backroads of DV are awesome but I would not travel them on P rated tires. I'd recommend at least D rated LTR's and I use E rated LTR's on my Frontier/Eagle. Also an LTR spare, plug kit and compressor. Go prepared and have fun...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West North to Alaska Via The Cassiar Highway

Did the Cassiar in 98 when it was still all gravel and had no problems and it was one of the highlights of our AK trip. Beat the hell out of the ALCAN.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Taking The Plunge

100acre, Yes, it's backwards like shotguns, the lower numbers are bigger. The added cost of thicker wire is almost negligible (8AWG is less than $1/ft at Home Depot). There's no downside to having a bigger wire than you need but a small wire can lead to too large a voltage drop.

JaS That looks like a good setup, I'll check into those boxes.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Sealed Battery Box

Mark, That makes sense to me, since I have a bare bones shell model I need to build an equivalent storage area that is vented to the outside.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West #1 refillable propane bottles

I've refilled the small 1 lb tanks using an adapter for years, however, it is possible to overfill. I've had 2 tanks that were very cold when I filled them and as they warmed they actually bulged and the pressure relief valve vented. Better to have a 3/4 filled tank and ere on the side of safety.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Taking The Plunge

100acre If you are having them install the solar wiring I would request that they use at least 8AWG wire or larger to reduce voltage drop from the panels to the charge controller.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Sealed Battery Box

Mark, Yeah, I thought of that but just don't like the idea of venting into the camper, I'll probably just build my own box.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Sealed Battery Box

My understanding is that even AGM batteries can off gas so I'm looking for a sealed battery box that I can vent to the outside: 6.1 Release of Ignitable Gasses All lead acid batteries, including VRLA batteries, produce hydrogen and oxygen gases during normal charging. Even though VRLA...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Sealed Battery Box

I'm getting ready to install a 100w Renogy panel with sunsaver charge controller to run a compressor cooler. I have an Eagle shell and am looking for a sealed battery box big enough to fit a group 27 deep cycle battery to install in the camper that I can vent to the outside to vent any produced...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Is solar worth it?

I agree reading HB is a slog to find those nuggets of wisdom but here is a major one: "Big wire is cheap compared to the cost of panels, so err on the big side. You can either run big wire or install multiple smaller runs and split the panels up into several feeds. DO NOT tie the wires...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Which way should I wander?

Ditto, CO, UT and NV. Also, don't drive the ALCAN the whole way, it's BORING! Try the Cassiar to the ALCAN.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Is solar worth it?

Hebe, Read Handy Bob, the voice of experience (and electrical engineering) says that 10 gauge is not enough. Thicker wire is pretty cheap compared to everything else in the system and you might as well only do it once. Good luck with your install.
