RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Top-down use: how often do you sleep in/use your FWC with the top down?

I spent the second night ever in our Hawk in stealth mode in a condo parking lot in SLC. I awoke disoriented in the middle of the night to a screaming alarm beeping. It was the CO alarm, I had used up most of the oxygen within the confines of the closed up camper. Had no idea it was that...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Air bag and tire pressure

Ottorodgers, no swaying on the highway, unless there are really strong crosswinds, but again, with the truck that loaded, I'm not pushing it. I usually keep the speed at or below 100 kph. My payload is similar to yours, probably 2000 lbs or more with the wife and dog. The real noticeable swaying...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Air bag and tire pressure

Wow, lots of experienced opinions here, all 14 pages of it! We have a 2006 dbl. cab Tundra with a 2012 Hawk on it. On trips longer than a weekend, our rig is overloaded with too much swag, including kayaks/boards on the roof. I've always tried to keep things simple, but am tempted to add...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Dometic 3 way fridge won't stay closed off road

We absolutely encountered this same problem with our 2012 Dometic 3 way right off the bat, not after the fridge was a couple of years old. I was shocked that an RV fridge would be made with such a weak little plastic latch. It kind of ticked me off. I just made a strap out of two 1" Velcro...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West FWC Roof Rack Use, Roof Box, Kayaks

Josh41- I have a 2012 Hawk on an older Tundra. There is no getting around needing a ladder if you have boats or anything else on your roof racks. I have been using that 6 ft collapsible folding ladder that others have mentioned in this forum, and really like it. There is a 5 ft version also...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Fridge Latch

Paul, I can drill holes and stitch Velcro, but can't figure out how to make the photo file size small enough to post on here. I could email a couple to ya. Jim

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Water Heater Questions

We only run our water heater with the pilot on, never turn it to "On". After the first couple of hours after lighting it, the pilot keeps that 6 gals of water plenty hot for dishes and for a quick shower. Saves all that propane for the fridge. Try it.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Fridge Latch

I had the same problem with the feeble Dometic "latch". I put a small eyebolt thru the wall next to the door, close to where the reefer hinges. Put another eyebolt thru the small strip of cabinet wood between the reefer and the heater, used big fender washers and nyloc nuts. Bought about a two...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton

Sorry, that was 30 mpg, not mph. Just trying to make light of a potentially serious discussion, and tweak some noses at the same time. Yup, I used to tease my sisters too.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West 1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton

Oh man, this HAS been beat to death, but I can't resist, cause I'm one of the guilty ones driving an 06 double cab Tundra with a pimped-out Hawk. In a weak moment, I sold our 99 3/4 ton GMC 4x4 to get the year old Tundra with only 7000 miles on it, before the FWC was even a glimmer in our eyes...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Canoe or kayak on FWC

Like the sound of those boat loaders, have to check those out. We're not getting any younger, or taller. GUNWALES, right.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Canoe or kayak on FWC

Yep, topes and crosswinds are your worse enemies. But even with all that, I see you made it to the most famous palm tree in Baja, camelracer. Nice! My problem with the hully rollers is that the stern end of the hull on my "sportfisher" is too narrow for the rollers to really support the boat...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Canoe or kayak on FWC

I thought I'd chime in here. We are Yakima all the way (since 1982). We almost always have one or two long open-top fishing kayaks on the roof when we take trips, and they are wonderful once they are on the water, but way too heavy on land. We always take them down to pop the camper up. I have...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Not Blaming my Hawk but....

I felt the porpoising affect as soon as I got on the freeway with our 06 tundra, leaving the Woodland factory 2 years ago. I had already upgraded to bilstein shocks, and have Hellwig overload springs on top of the factory rear springs. Yes, it only happens with certain road conditions and...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West 1st Gen Tundra/Eagle MPG

We have a 1st gen 2006 tundra 4.7 V8 with a hawk, usually drive 60 mph or so. Most of our trips have been to Baja with surfboards and a kayak, or two kayaks, on the roof. We are not aerodynamic by any means. I'm happy when we get 14 mpg with this load. Head or crosswinds cut us down to 10 to 12...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Awning Thoughts?

My wife watched the demo of the fancy Euro side awning at the woodland factory, and insisted that we get one on our Hawk. We have owned a tent trailer since 1994, used it a ton for many years on many camping trips, but I think I can count fingers on one hand the number of times we used the...
