Astro Thread

Tried to take a photo through the viewing glasses but it didn't work. Decent shot of the sun but the transit is just too small for a hand held shot. Oh well.

If you happen to be in the Bishop or Big Pine area (Eastern Sierra), specifically Westgard Pass, up towards the Bristlecone Pine Forest (White Mtns), you may want to stop in for the Open House at...

Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), open house June 9, 2012.

I think they have an Open House twice a year and are otherwise closed to the public.

These radio observatory dishes used to be located in the Owens Valley, near Big Pine.
Previously some sort of a SETI connection and they changed their funding sources and moved the dishes.
Don't forget to call home.

Thanks, that's interesting. I've seen that newer installation when looking south from up on White Mt Road, but didn't know what it was about...figured it was some secret NSA facility... ;-)
But there still are radio dishes near Big Pine, aren't there? At least there were when I lady went through there this winter. ??

Here's a cool pic.

Really enjoyed the photo!

I've been fortunate lately to hook up and do some short photo trips with Brad Goldpaint who is a specialist in Astro/night photography.
He was leading a workshop over this past weekend at Crater Lake and lucked into a really cool/rare occurrence for this far south on the globe.

That is very cool - and beautiful!

Ever notice how the really dedicated photographers just "luck" into these opportunities? ;)

Jupiter, Venus, crescent-Moon Conjunction pre-dawn tomorrow (7/15/2012)!

From a SpaceWeather link from the S&T link on highz's Aurora Alert topic:

"SUNDAY MORNING SKY SHOW: Set your alarm for dawn on Sunday morning, July 15th. Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon are gathering for a bright three-way conjunction in the eastern sky before sunrise. Must-see!"

Hmmm....since CraggyMan and I were already considering heading out to Pine Mt tonight to check out the aurora (or try to), maybe I'll spend the night out there to be in position for this pre-dawn show.

Glad you posted this. It should be a beautiful show for WtW's talented photographers, too, what with Aldebaran and the Hyades nearby as well.

A good video to give this topic a bump.

Night Skies

Cool video, ski, thanks for the link.
Seems like there's been a lot of, a lot more of, time lapse night-sky photography over the last year or so. Or maybe I've just been exposed to it a lot more through Facebook friends and their links and WTW and similar networks.

At last count I'm figuring about 14 days spent bivouac-ing in Yosemite on a number of big walls. From my firsthand experience the stars move awfully dang slow compared to this cool video... And I think the slowness of movement is proportional to the discomfort of the bivvy...
I am also starting to explore timelapse as it is a relatively easy function to control on the new cameras and the low-noise feature of the newer processors is really cool. I picked up a Intervalometer for my newest rig (Nikon D7000) that is way easy to use. Has inspired me to start shooting some time lapse for future use when I can actually figure out how to process them. The Vello unit can be programmed to start shooting at a set time and shut down when done so is pretty east to just set up and let it do its thing while snoozing the night away.

There's going to be a comet visible in March. It's on its first trip into the Solar System from the Oort cloud, so is pretty much an unknown as to how bright it will get. It could be good or it could be a bust. Here are some details:

A good excuse to go camping at a dark site with a good horizon!

great idea...thanks for the tip!

Didn't hear anything pinning down a date other than early March. The first weekend in March is a no go for us. I'll watch for more specific dates.
