Back to Oregon - July 2022

I am glad you both had fun fishing and had some nice hikes. As for the Mermaid -- to many people nowadays see themselves as some sort of star player in their own action movie. Makes no sense, but seems pretty common. The Steens are amazing. Thanks for sharing!

Another excellent experience and TR, thanks for letting us tag along!

Next time, try a size 8 ought Purple Zonker. Rumor is mermaids are suckers for glitz and color.

Thanks why no pictures of the mermaid?
But we'll take your word.
Great looking fish.I have been waiting for a trip from you with lots of fishing.

Another beautiful location.

mermaid... incredible. Nice to see you kept your cool. I lost mine last weekend. We were in a campground and had generators running on both sides of us. We moved sites the next morning. New guys shows up and has music playing loud while setting up his site. I said some not nice things I later wished I hadn't. Had to patch it up later, and he turned out to be a great neighbor for the remainder of the stay. Still learning how to be a wise old fart instead of a crotchety one. :p

The good thing is, the neighborly relationship was salvaged. Good on you!

It seems music is verboten in a campground while generators are not. The last time we asked someone if they really needed to run the generator all evening he drove his truck around the loop several times honking his horn and sent the camp host to tell me my guitar playing was too loud. I really think all campgrounds need to be generator segregated and that anyone running a generator in a campground so they can watch TV (that tell-tale blue glow) needs re-education (pretty much an entire campground population was conspiring to disable a generator one night - we left dozens of nasty notes on the windshield instead 'cause some of us have a conscience and/or a fear of retaliation/punishment) The reality is that I rarely stay in a campground and I have left an already paid for site on more than one occasion. That is the extent of my "wisdom".

Thanks for the TR. How were the skeeters? We camped just outside Frenchglen several years ago, in July just after they opened the byway. The swarms were epic, the worst I’ve ever experienced.

First off, thanks to all for the nice comments. Yes, I know I'm tardy finishing up the final chapter, Part Two. Julie and I were invited along on a trip over to the Mammoth area backcountry and we were off again. So, now I'm working on two trip stories.................................

Please stay tuned and thanks for your patience. :)

Hurry every chance you get!

Been there many times and it's a great area. We've backpacked both "arms" of the mountains. Earlier in the year, at the lower trails, the creek has more fishing opportunities. They are "wild" reband trout. There's also great fishing down (or upstream) from the campground if you hit it right. So many side creeks, etc. to fish too. I haven't fished the lake at the top you fished as we normally go earlier in the year before the road is open to hit higher flows lower down. Great area.

Thanks for sharing! We do love the rock art. You both really do have a sense of the land and how it likely was some 9000 years ago give or take a few thousand. You probably already have a copy of Steven Simms 'Ancient Peoples of the Great Basin & Colorado Plateau'. It is the single best readable account I have come across of the past climates and peopling of the Great Basin. If you don't have a copy it is very much worth it.

We look forward to your accounts of future adventures!

Yes, the last thing we ever expected to encounter was a mermaid in an alpine lake. The world is sure a different place now than those so many years ago Julie and I began adventuring together. The noise and rudeness displayed by others now - even from those not acting out some fantasy - is so disappointing.

The question I have is how do you see to tie on an #18?
When I ignore what my left eye is telling me, I do fairly well. Good light is mandatory. Julie is there to help. She knows the knots.
