We like to grill but were not crazy about taking along a small barbeque, briquettes and starter fluid so had been looking for alternatives. Yesterday we came across the stove and the grill in the links below and brought them home to try - REI assured us they would take it back if we did not like it. We cooked some salmon filets that turned out really well which is a good sign as salmon is not the easiest thing to cook.

The stove is definitely not your usual stove but we were interested because both it and the grill are small and fairly light. They will easily fit in the cabinet in our Fleet. Last night we used twigs and hickory chips for fuel but I think we will switch to wood pellets and mesquite or hickory chips for traveling. Anyway, I thought I would put up a post about the stove and grill because, if I just saw an ad for it, I would probably just laugh and ignore it.

That thing is way cool! I usually have a weber portable gas grill I cook on but this is way small. I wonder how many years of service one could expect from it.

My phone died...Let me start a fire is this little can and plug in... lol

Part of me loves this perfect blending of stone age and space age, another part thinks...if I need a wood burning stove, do I really need an iphone? But then again, I don't even have an iphone, just a POS pay as you go cell phone.

I like the fourdog titanium stove. Lightweight, almost indesctrucatble, fits in a snow peak, use alcohol or a esbit tablet to get 'er going, then wood to keep it going. Its almost the perfect stove, but then again you can't charge anything with it.

imix, I totally agree there are better options out there for just a small stove. The difference maker, for me though, is the grill attachment for the Biolite. So far as I can tell, there is nothing similar in size or weight from any of the small stove manufacturers. This may change at some point but right now I could care less about charging electronics from the stove. But the ability to grill on something so small and efficient with a variety of fuel sources is unique. Just my $00.02.

steelhead, I really enjoyed your post about this innovative stove, thanks. Please keep us posted on how this works out.

Especially the converting-heat-to-electricity function...I've heard of thermoelectric, but I know nothing about it. I've seen/heard-of other super-efficient little wood-burners, but this goes beyond that.

A quick follow up about this stove. After using it about 15 times over the past year (yeah, we have not been getting out enough), we are as impressed with it as when we first brought it home. After some experimentation, we think that using wood pellets for grills (like the Traeger product) with a fire starter works the best. Using twigs is do-able but they burn too fast to keep an even heat for very long and it is a pain to constantly feed it. It is easy to moderate the heat with the chimney vent and the grill has multiple heat zones. A really nice feature is that the grill funnels grease back into the stove which then burns it. That makes cleanup a lot simpler for things like bacon. We have not tested the USB charger feature though so cannot comment on it. All in all, this stove fits our needs perfectly and we would buy another one if something happened to this one.

Cheers!
