Custom trailers behind our campers

For short trips, I wouldn't expect one to make it home from an Alaskan trip and I wouldn't expect more than a decade of regular use service from them, but Harbor Freight has some options.

Longhorn,

Where can I find the posts from Park concerning the Space Trailer....

Space Trailer will end up slightly over $3K...HF looks good, but I have a thing against 12-13" wheels..they are indeed inexpensive.

Ruger and Expeditions look very well made and stout...but $$$$..only need to tote about 200 lbs at most and two 17' Sea Kayaks

Phil

Phil, look around for his posts. Go to trip reports. He has posted on his Alaska and Baja trips and links to his blog. He bought a small trailer for his Alaskan trip. You can send him PM

Yeah, I only mentioned the HF options with short, day trips in mind. I wouldn't use or suggest them for much more. Everything about them is too light weight.

Personally not a fan of channel structure trailers, but they have their place. Might look around at this sort of thing: http://www.carsontrailer.com/subs/trailers/utility/utility/utility.html
Generally for something like an Alaska trip you'll want to buy a heavier axle than you think you need. Not for the weight capacity, but for the bigger, stouter wheel bearings & heavier duty tires.

I have been "wanting" to tow a SMALL trailer to put a sea kayak on (and a small box to hold the kayaking gear). Reason is not wanting to put the boat on top of the camper. I am a little concerned about the length (sea kayaks are 15-17 ft long). Been thinking of buying a small boat trailer and welding my own rig. Tough decision about pulling things....
Chris
Hey, you will be better off roof-topping your sea kayak because you will need a pretty long trailer for a 17' sea kayak. we put 12'6 SUPs up there with no prob. We were in Edmonds yesterday, dropping paddlers off for a downwind paddle back to Golden Gardens!

I'd guess about a 20' ball to transom length trailer for a 17' long anything. The good news is that you could stack more than one once you have the foot-print. Just a little earlier this morning I saw just such a trailer with four kayaks on it in a 2X2 arrangement, but a 2 wide X 3 tall would be doable w/o being excessively tall.

We have been hauling a Casita 17' Trailer behind our FWC Ranger II Shell to Baja for several years now. I emptied out the shell and used it for hauling gear including mt bikes, ARB fridge, fishing tackle, gas cans, rubber boat. We lived in the Casita Trailer which was comfortable but severely limited the places we could go. We have just ordered a new Grandby and a new Ruger Trailer for our Baja travels, hoping to explore a lot of new places. The trailer is to haul the 10-1/2' rubber boat, carry 2 mountain bikes, 1 kayak and the 15 hp Honda motor and all the gas and water we will need to spend multiple weeks on a beach somewhere without always having to run into town. BTW we are driving a Dodge 3/4 ton shortbed with Timbrens. It should be quite the Baja setup. We take delivery in December of both units.

We've had experience with a cheap folding trailer like the Harbor Freight ones and it was not good on dirt roads which is where you want to go with your FWC in the first place. I don't want to deal with a broken trailer 20 miles down a dirt road in Baja.

Rfg - I looked very closely at one of these and almost pulled the trigger on it. My concern was how it would hold up to a long trip, like going to Alaska, so I would be very interested in how your trip goes.
I've been back for about two and a half months but I had forgotten about this thread until I saw today's post. We did almost 9500 miles and spent 79 nights in our Outfitter. The trailer survived the Alaska Highway, about 125 miles of the Dempster Highway, and all of the Top of the World Highway.

Copied this frame from Exped. Portal and added my needs for storage, kayaks and bikes. Pulled it on a great trip all over WY, ID and MT this past summer with no problems. Jeep JY springs with coil-over shocks make for a very stable, soft ride. Not much I'd change for my needs.
