I’ve seen some equipment on front and rear bumpers that would be potentially dangerous for the other vehicle in a rear end crash or T-bone crash. I’ve never heard of anyone being stopped for defeating the DOT required crash safety features. Today I saw one that was different and I thought was particularly bad.

A lifted Jeep Patriot had a 60 inch Hi-Lift type jack attached with light hardware across the hood just in front of the windshield. (Of course it was shiny and bright and appeared never to have been used by the person driving this grocery-getting Jeep.) It did not look like the hardware was strong enough to hold the jack in place in a serious crash. One of the possible scenarios would simply result in natural selection, but more likely is this person rear ending someone and sending that jack through that person’s rear window. I wish people would think more about crash loads and impacts when attaching heavy, sharp, or non-energy-absorbing objects on their vehicles.
