In early Oct I want to go down 2/3 of Baja our 2 weeks. At one point I heard they had health check points on the highway, then I heard they dont. Officially essential travel only.

We will be boondocking and beach camping. Not much risk of contact either way.

Any recent experience?

"Baja Nomad" is a good site to get information. If you end up going, make sure you get insurance. As well, make sure the insurance will cover you on a dirt road. Since there is only one paved road, you coverage is very limited.

good advice from both, thanks!

I called Travel Baja Club an agency here in San Diego that arranges for travel and sells auto/medical insurance. She reports that the highways dont have any Covid check points (they closed a few weeks ago). Each individual town and associated beach are on their own policies. She thought I would be good to go although it can change quickly.

Im going to call her again after 21 Sept.

I've heard a few trip reports in the past couple weeks of people having no issues traveling in the Baja. Definitely read Baja Nomad trip reports on the forum.

Get vehicle insurance, I typically use Baja Bound.

Also recommend taking the 5 and not the 1. Feel free to PM for spot recommendations.

Yes, thanks. We do intend to take the 5 not the 1. Start here in Jamul then head over to Mexically for crossing. Im going to look at the surf report on Wed to see if we start over on the pacific side looking for surf and then finish our loop coming North the Sea of Cortez side from Loreto North. If no surf later this week then we will do the reverse loop.

Surf spots Im thinking El cordon and then scorpion bay.

I just got back from 3 weeks in Baja. The bottom line is the country is pretty much open. People wear masks in general but we got no questions about essential travel.

Any updates on recent travel? My wife and I are planning on crossing in Lukeville/Sonoyta on Saturday. We are both healthcare workers and have received both vaccine doses. Hopefully we will not run in to any issues.
