Lost Lakes - August 2020

Thanks Ski.What a great excuse to spend a night out and about.
That's nice area around Lost Lakes.
I find it interesting the tops on the hills you climb have all that loose flat rock.

I didn't realize they opened the gate to get back there.

You must have encountered the very large rocky grave site at the base of the low Lake. Particularly well done with a nice unmarked, slab type, headstone. Often a single Lake in years past, during high rainfall years, now too much reoccurring drought. I recognize a handful of these posts, had to comment on this one. It’s dated history of being a getaway for that quick, quiet night. Weekday, anyway. Great pics. Meadow L at the other end of the drainage has pretty Cutt’s.

Thanks for taking us a long and boy an I envious or you guys----nothing but smoke here! I'm inspired now, so I'm going to try again to get out of the smoke and head up to Lakeview then east to the Sheldon and south to Austin and the Monitor Range-wish me luck and no smoke/fires! Nice and comforting TR!

Thanks Frank for the nice comment. The layers of volcanics in this zone of fire and ice are all different from one summit to another.

So Ski, no mention of wetting a line

Last time (seven years ago) we were at Lost Lakes they were mostly drained. The vest & rod were, of course, in the truck. We looked for trout and watched a midge hatch with interest. We saw no trout feeding...................

I didn't realize they opened the gate to get back there.

The temporary closure was due to mandated improvements to PG&E's dams on both lower and upper blue lakes. Lots of equipment involved in that work, along with space needed for supply storage.

Stokeme, thanks for the comment and information. We have not seen the grave site. We did not spend any time going through the heavily used areas as we did not want to disturb the backpackers and gave them lots of space and privacy. We always approach staying at Lost Lakes with much caution as it shows a lot of vehicle use. Several huge fire ring monuments is a good sign along with bare ground. We lucked out this time with it quiet. I suspect this place on a weekend could be quite unpleasant with groups and noise.


For this quick overnight we had extra plans - B through E. As I said, we lucked out and had a nice stay.

Smoke, yup, the air quality is a challenge. Some location's AQI numbers have been downright dangerous to everyone.

We hope you head to the high country of central Nevada and find better conditions. A hint of fall and maybe the aspens beginning to turn? We hope you and Timber have a good trip.
