MSR wilderness stove

I dug out my MSR stove today that I haven’t used since 2009,while wilderness hunting in the mountains.

Figured with it being so compact it would come in handy camping in my truck topper when heating or cooking outside. I imagine there’s probably lots of regulations out West with it being an open flame and white gas. I sure burns even and hot.

I’ve used white gas for decades and have never found an issue with it, though more caution needs to be adhered to.

Yep - I still use the same. All the gas cylinders that go in the garbage.........

Glenn, often (not always) a liquid fuel stove like this can be used when there is a fire restriction. Always good to check. Remember, in California, you need to have a fire permit. They’re free and online.

Yep, that is still the stove of choice for us when backpacking. I cannot remember when we bought our current whisperlite, over 30 years ago for sure. I liked the ease of tear down and getting it cleaned up in the field. Our little buddy still uses his original, first model MSR. He took it on an arctic expedition where they skied to the magnetic north pole - long before GPS. When you hear his stove burning, you instantly know why ours is called the whisperlite. He came back with great stories about what it was like navigating with handheld compass that close to the pole.

They are great stoves. And I believe you can still get all the parts for them. I still own an XGK multi fuel expedition stove we used climbing high peaks that I refuse to get rid of. You never know when good ol gas might come in handy!

Oh yes the old XGK stove. Went on a winter ski trip with a friend who said he would bring the stove. We could barely get it burning and made it work for two nights. That is when he discovered that the Sigg bottle he brought had paint thinner in it instead of white gas. But it worked!
