Forest Service Temporarily Closes Southern California National Forests, Adds Prohibitions in Others

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - Most of California remains under the threat of unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions with a combination of extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit. Due to these conditions, the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing the following temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts. They will go into effect at 5:00 pm Pacific Standard Time on Monday, September 7, 2020, and will be re-evaluated daily as conditions change.

1. Closure of the following National Forests: Stanislaus National Forest, Sierra National Forest, Sequoia National Forest, Inyo National Forest, Los Padres National Forest, Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino National Forest, and Cleveland National Forest.

2. Prohibition of the use of any ignition source on all National Forest System lands (campfires, gas stoves, etc.) throughout California. (This includes the Eldorado National Forest.)
3. Closure of all developed campgrounds and day-use sites on National Forests in California. (This includes the Eldorado National Forest.)

“The wildfire situation throughout California is dangerous and must be taken seriously. Existing fires are displaying extreme fire behavior, new fire starts are likely, weather conditions are worsening, and we simply do not have enough resources to fully fight and contain every fire,” said Randy Moore, Regional Forester for the USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region. “We are bringing every resource to bear nationally and internationally to fight these fires, but until conditions improve, and we are confident that National Forest visitors can recreate safely, the priority is always to protect the public and our firefighters. With these extreme conditions, these temporary actions will help us do both.”

An example of extreme fire behavior is the Creek Fire on the Sierra National Forest which began on Friday Sep. 4th and grew rapidly on Saturday, Sep. 5th. The fire made a 15-mile run in a single day and burned 36,000 acres, prompting evacuations and life saving measures. The California National Guard evacuated at least 200 people from Wagner Mammoth Pool Campground and assessed them for medical needs.

The Forest Service thanks our partners and the public for their cooperation and understanding of this monumental fire threat. It is critical that all Californians and national forest visitors follow these important closures and restrictions for their own safety and the safety of our firefighters.

The Forest Service manages 18 National Forests in the Pacific Southwest Region, which encompasses over 20 million acres across California, and assists forest landowners in California, Hawaii and the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands. National forests supply 50 percent of the water in California and form the watershed of most major aqueducts and more than 2,400 reservoirs throughout the state. Emergency Camping Prohibition on the Eldorado National Forest

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - In addition to the emergency closures and the fire banhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hfzv...0-dusL8MSnW6TiEsHEuaN9Q-LUgcO3Gu5PT8hg1dE7w==http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hfzv...0-dusL8MSnW6TiEsHEuaN9Q-LUgcO3Gu5PT8hg1dE7w== announced for California national forests earlier today, the Eldorado National Forest is one of 5 forests Northern California included in Regional Order No. 20-09 http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hfzv...0-dusL8MSnW6TiEsHEuaN9Q-LUgcO3Gu5PT8hg1dE7w==http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hfzv...0-dusL8MSnW6TiEsHEuaN9Q-LUgcO3Gu5PT8hg1dE7w==which was issued this evening, and prohibits all camping except in wilderness areas and within 500 feet of the Pacific Crest Trail. This order is effective beginning Tuesday, September 8, 2020, for the Eldorado National Forest, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Lassen National Forest, Plumas National Forest, and Tahoe National Forest.

“These are extreme circumstances,” said Forest Supervisor Jeff Marsolais. “We have a Red Flag wind event in the forecast with vegetation conditions that are as flammable as they were during the 2014 King Fire. That fire ran 15 miles and burned over 50 thousand acres in a single day. Resources will be scarce with so many other large wildfires in California right now.”

The temporary closures of developed campgrounds, recreation sites, and dispersed camping, as well as the temporary fire ban that prohibits all campfires regardless of ignition source or location, will be reevaluated as conditions change.

Most of California remains under the threat of unprecedented and dangerous fire conditions with a combination of extreme heat, significant wind events, dry conditions, and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit. Due to these conditions, the USFS Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region is announcing the following temporary closures and fire restrictions to provide for public safety and reduce the potential for human caused fire starts.

The Eldorado, Lassen, LTBMU, Plumas, Tahoe. Stanislaus National Forest, Sierra National Forest, Sequoia National Forest, Inyo National Forest, Los Padres National Forest, Angeles National Forest, San Bernardino National Forest, and Cleveland National Forest are now all closed temporarily until September 12th.

This affects many of our favorite trails, The Rubicon, Fordyce, Barrett, Deer Valley, Ducy, Bald Mountain, swamp Lake, Slick Rock and many more are in the closed forests. Please stay away from these areas until the fire danger is over. Dangerous times in California right now please be safe.

Planned work weekend at the cabin in Green Valley Lake, San Bernardino NF. I won’t be firing up the generator out of an abundance of caution. Happy they’re closing the forests/campgrounds, we have one in GVL. Fires down here seem to be started due to human causation.

Sure is getting harder and harder to find a safe place to play out there! I don't think I can remember a fire season like this one and expect this one will only get worse before it gets better!

Smoke

We were just dispersed camping in Big Bear over Labor Day...made it out before the fires started and they closed the forest. Lots of smoke and ash out in Southern California. Praying for the firefighters.

We have six to eight more (who really knows) of fire season up here. Sure hope this isn't one for the record books. Things could just be getting started, sorry to say.

All National Forests in California are now temporarily closed. See attached document.

Yep-even the Modoc NF closed down! After 3 days of clear skies, the smoke here in the Honey Lake Valley came back with a vengeance yesterday. What is really scary, go pull up the fs incident web map page-then you get a good picture of what we are facing -and the real "official" old fire season is just starting! Truck/camper has been packed for several days now with no place to go, and I am probably lucky I didn't head out somewhere because everywhere looks bad.

Smoke

The California National Forests remain closed. The posted notices read "until further notice". It gets confusing because the mechanism (regulation) for closure by the Regional Forester requires an end date and does not allow a "to be determined" date for ending a closure order. This is why we are seeing notices of extension such as the attachments below. If extreme conditions persist, we'll see another extension. If conditions improve, we'll see the closure run out.

Lets hope conditions improve with these nightmare conditions. Until further notice is good for me.

Eldorado National Forest partially re-opening recreation opportunities

PLACERVILLE, Calif. – The Eldorado National Forest will be re-opening some recreation opportunities on the forest as of Saturday, September 19, at 8:00 a.m. when the Regional Emergency Forest Closure Order 20-13 is rescinded for nine forests, including the Eldorado, due to the moderation in fire weather. Each forest is implementing their own forest specific Forest Order to address the continuing fire danger and recreation concerns. The Eldorado is limiting camping to developed campgrounds. In addition, the Eldorado has implemented an emergency fire closure area for the Fork Fire, this includes many facilities within the Crystal Basin Recreation Area.

The key points that forest visitors should know are:

The detours designated by Caltrans are State Routes 89, 88, 49 and 16, through Amador, El Dorado and Alpine County. Mormon Emigrant Trail is not a Highway 50 detour as the road was not engineered to handle the commercial traffic.

There will be no access to portions of Wrights Lake Road during chip sealing operations next week from Tuesday through Thursday, September 22-24.

Yup, it may be a bummer, but we're going to be patient and see what unfolds weather wise and with fires. October is usually our big fire month.

While its nice and clear here, looking at the cams its still smoky enough to make me not want to camp in the Sierra yet anyway.

Up here in the high desert, they just today opened up several cg's on both Lassen and Modoc NF's! Seeing how I still plan to get out of here ;later this week, I have a few new options to camp at in case the smoke/fire conditions in Southern Ore/northern Nevada change  on my way over to the Sheldon.... As a side, my neighbor just back from the Steens; he said even though there were lot's of people up there especially for this late in the season, they still found a pace to hike and hide and it was great to be out of the smoke for a while! Well after 3 whole days of almost smoke free skies, the smoke came back today in force! I can't get out of here to soon, back, to packing the rig and waiting for my "Chewy" order to arrive.

The restrictions continue in California. Several southern California Forests are still completely closed.

PLACERVILLE, Calif. - The regional fire restrictions orderhttp://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jAnU...7tQbqdt1xzjrYf6GLz0zRjomhQbH6_qcQE6KKha7iKQ==http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jAnU...7tQbqdt1xzjrYf6GLz0zRjomhQbH6_qcQE6KKha7iKQ== prohibiting the use of all ignition sources on national forests in California has been extended due to the ongoing fire danger across the state. Under this fire ban, which includes the Eldorado National Forest, no campfires, stove fires, portable gas fire pits, smoking materials or any other type of ignition is allowed on national forest lands.

“There is still a lot of potential for another large wildfire,” said Forest Supervisor Jeff Marsolais. “The Fork Fire on the Eldorado is still not contained, and there are many other large fires burning throughout the west. Resources will be hard to get, so we need everyone to take this fire ban seriously. If you see anyone lighting a fire of any kind in the forest, please call the nearest ranger station.”
