I don't recall if I had reception in Gerlach itself, but just south of Gerlach I was able to use the phone, check emails etc. It was near whatever the industrial/mine area was maybe 3 or 4 miles south. I was traveling north so once I checked my emails, I didn't bother to check in Gerlach only minutes later.
I haven't been out on the Black Rock Playa.
AT&T doesn't work in lot's of NE Calif, southern Oregon, and NW Nevada, but sometimes does, but works around Burns-but not around John Day-sort of confusing isn't it? That's why I just got the spot2, I've given up wondering if I'm getting out on the cell phone, so at least now people will know where i am when i break down! He's right always gas up when you have a chance-Black Rock is neat, but probably to many people during the Burning Man, want a nice side trip try Little High Rock Canyon-place of the last supposed Indian massacre (which it wasn't) in the area-monument in way back in the canyon; by the way the caves in the area were grated to keep the vandals from digging them up-quite a job-had to use choppers to bring the grates in-couldn't use vehicles because the area then was a wilderness study area-never could figure that out they could drive in but we couldn't!
