Our 2012 Hawk shell was one of those built for a short duration of 6 foot beds with high sides...and has four longitundinal 5/8 " strips adding up to 1 7/8" in tall off the bed of truck.
This leaves about 4 1/2 " above my Toyota fender rails at each side of the camper.....
At first I thought of lowering it but in fact we store a great deal of whatever under each side...shovel for off road...spare rolled goods.
I intend to open a trap door at the rear of camper in order to stow stuff under the camper.....very low and a good place for weighty things.
