Southern Utah (with a little northern AZ) May 2011

Wonderful report and photos as usual. Love those panoramas. Sorry I couldn't get away from work to meet up for a day or two (but at least the instrument commissioning is going well here). The cost of gas is a problem alright. But, I can't think of a better way to spend money than traveling the west.

Mark, I was in Long Cny on my honda trail taking a pic. and your truck went by and I snapped a pic of you going down the cny. I've looked all over the computer for it to post but I must have deleted it.Do you remember somebody in long cny in the middle of the road on a honda trail taking pics? It was around the 15th of may,I could be off a wk.I loose track of dates when out and about.

These cuties were growing next to the road, near the campground -- don't know what they are:

Mark,

Susan says those flowers are Oregon Grape Holly. FYI wiki link

Great photos and stories of your sojourn. Keep 'em coming and congrats on retirement. ;)

More, please. What an adventure you had. I am enjoying your comments and images. Cool snake. Whipsnake?
.....
Wonderful reminders of our 3 week trip last Fall. Great photos with some incredible clouds and dark stormy weather. It is sad about your headache, but I am glad it lessened later. Gas is expensive even will be in out Taco with auto and 4 cylinder. But, life is for exploring and enjoying our beautiful country so don't sweat it.

Thanks, clikrf8. :) Not sure what snake species...I'll look it up -- I have a reptile field guide, I should use it.

One of our favorite trips. Thanks for the great pix.

Thanks, chnlisle. :)

Great trip report. I am enjoying every bit of it.
I am reading your report while I am working on processing images from that area, the breaks help keep my eyes from going fuzzy.
The Capitol Reef area is such an amazing place.

Thanks, OH.
Yes, I could have definitely spent much more time exploring CR...and I will another time.

Looks like you had a great trip after you left Toni and me. Keep the photos coming.

Stew- I was also having a great time before I left.

1st. Thanks for a great trip report.
2nd. When you first posted, i was looking for ideas on where to go. Loved the photos, and since i had not been down there in years headed down to Escalante with the wife. We may have crossed paths once or twice.
Since it was our first trip of this nature in the truck camper, and your report was so helpful thought i would say thanks.
Glad your head is better.

Thanks, Wango, and you're welcome.

Great report. Beautiful country. Now I just have to figure out how to get 21 days off. I'm excited about three this weekend

Thanks, Craig. If you don't mind the long drive you could get a good taste of the area in even one week. It's a little closer to Sacramento than it is to Bend.

Thanks for taking the time to put that report together, you have some really wonderful pics in there. Way to kick off your retirement, you make us working stiffs just a wee bit jealous but that's ok.

Good onya

Thanks, Sunman. Hang in there, and one day you'll be old, too -- something to look forward to.

Thanks, highz. :) You're right about spending... And I do have some leeway/decision-room with the discretionary part of my budget.

Tuna- I drove (eastward) through Long Cyn on May 9...and I don't remember a photographer-on-Honda.

Sure it was me?

Thanks, Lighthawk.

Hmmm....yes, Oregon Grape. Kinda embarrassing that I didn't recognize the state flower of my own state!

Awesome. Thanks for the story and pics.

Great pics and sharp eye. Take another trip soon!

Thanks, guys! :)

Mark, our friend, stop banging your head and have more fun! It's wonderful country out there, isn't it? Be safe and we can hardly wait for more photos and details!
Have to ask, how do you like retirement?

Retirement: So far, so good! Turns out, it's more fun to play than to work -- who knew? :D

Mark, we greatly enjoyed your photos and chronicles of your adventures, thanks! Glad you're enjoying retirement, think we ought to start a little betting on the side on if you return to work after the trial run?
