Something to be aware of, no idea how affects things, the nylock wing nuts that I've seen were not steel. They were aluminum or some other soft metal casting.
I trick that I picked up somewhere when dealing with nylocks that you don't need to be full strength is to run a Starting tap part way thru the nylon itself. Seems odd to compromise a self-locking nut this way. Isn't the "self-locking" part why you used it? Yet more than once I've found myself doing this vary thing.
